A phone is a phone. That's all it should be, and that's all it should COST.

If budget is an issue and usage is minimal, look at prepaid phones. They can be had on the cheap... minute for minute is expensive, but for a month if not used very often, they can be quite practical.

I've got a few buddies who use TracFone and love it... I was looking at getting a 2nd, cheap phone for my other girlfriend...

And on the whole features thing: give me phone calls, and text messages. I prefer receiving texts to voicemails for simple things like "it's your brother, call me back" where it would normally take 5 minutes to log in and listen, when you can just flip your phone open and read the message in 30 seconds.

How much are you guys paying for the phone per month? My personal bills have been about €15-20 per month, I phone and text about 50/50. Hardly expensive for such a practical thing.

Every time I would sign a contract, I'd get hosed somewhere in the deal with extraneous charges (satellite adjust fee? **** you) so about 6 years ago, I swore never to do it again.

I do not currently have one, but my Daughter does, it's a pay as you go, and I will eventually get one of those too. Virgin has a "deal" where you pay 7 bucks a month, and 10 cents a minute actual use...I think i'ma try that...I had a Virgin phone before, and it's Sprint network, and they have decent coverage where I live...and a few of the phones are actually quite nice for the price / feature set you get...one has a full qwerty, stereo speakers and a nice LCD for 99 bucks... not too bad, I think.

No cell just landline. I wouldn't want to be able to be contacted 24/7. Besides, people lived many many years getting into and out of trouble without phones, why should I need one now? I think more and more young people are just lacking common sense so they need that phone as their lifeline.

Couldn't imagine living without one. I actually have two.

My main phone is my company phone that I can use privately too, as long as the private use is within reasonable limits. There's some pretty strict restrictions regarding what service numbers I can call or no which numbers I can send SMS's to, so that's one reason I have the other phone. It's a prepaid one, I had it long before I started working for my current company. I use it very rarely though. It's mostly switched off and all incoming calls are transferred to my main phone.

The only advantage I see with landline phones is that you don't need to charge them. Life became MUCH easier when the mobile phones got popular. Every kid starting school have one nowadays. I don't have a single friend in Finland that is of my age or younger that has a landline. Guess it's because our prices are among the lowest in Europe. The lowest I've seen is 2 cents per minute...

That's true, there really are no landlines around here any more. They do exist, but no-one uses them anymore, except at the office. I can't even remember when I've last dialed a private landline number on my celly.

people are not that important . i hate phones, cellular or landline, and dont see the need for communication to be literally attached to me. if wifey needs to get a hold of me, she sends the pony express, i mean she calls me at work or a friend's house . imagine that. and no im not some crazy old hippie, im 23, educated, have a very nice job, and a wife that is 7 months pregnant. oh, and i have a dog named Marty. hes cool.

For how much we pay, my last bill was $103. That was because I went over my texting limit and had to pay extra. My usual bill is $55, and it is NOT a data plan for a blackberry, just a regular plan. We get hosed on cell phone costs in Canada, but I still wouldn't do without mine.

I've got a landline at school, but I only use my cell. Even when I'm back at my parents' house, only my cell ever gets called. I can really see myself never getting a land line again.

People who say "I can't live without my phone" are funny. It's a good thing you weren't alive 10 years ago or so, when common folks didn't have cell phones, because you would have died.

I cannot stand being around people whose lives are defined by their cellphones...or love to have lengthy conversations about their cellphones. Or who are on their phones while driving. Or in restaurants. etc. etc.

I'm not saying I can't live without it. I'm saying I would never like to go back to the time when only landlines existed, and that calling people is so much more convenient nowadays.

If you don't want to be reachable, turn off the phone. It's not that hard. How often do you unplug your phone at home? Every night and at the start of the vacation, I suppose.

Certain stuff I do well without. I don't have a microwave at home, for example. Haven't had one for five years. I don't miss having one. But I would miss my mobile. It would make my life harder.

I want to be reachable. Accidents happen, and I don't want to be the last one to get informed if, let's say (and God forbid), my twinbrother or another family member has been seriously injured or killed in a car accident. I don't mind people asking me out for a beer or so either. I can always say no if I don't have. It's easier for them to call me directly on my phone than to wait until they guess I'm home, and then, perhaps, call me again.

I hate when people are not reachable. One of my best friends since many years is famous for never answering the phone. A couple of times even his mother have called me to ask if I have any clue about where he is. He can leave the phone unanswered for weeks if he's in that mode. I couldn't do that. People have joked that he must be working for Secret Service or so...

I haven't had a land line since I moved out of my parents' house 8 years ago. I've had a cell phone the whole time, but I normally run on a government plan so it's not too expensive. It's convenient to have.
