If you don't want to be reachable, turn off the phone. It's not that hard. How often do you unplug your phone at home? Every night and at the start of the vacation, I suppose.

I would love to go back to landlines. I don't like the idea of people being able to reach me at any time. It gives me more obligations to have to do things.

You could just turn it off if you don't want to be reachable. But as soon as you turn it back on, you have voicemail and people saying "why didn't you answer your phone, blah blah blah blah blah".

I just say I was busy or I didn't want to... or nothing. It's actually quite easy. ;)

Aha! This thread just became interesting. Apparently, there is a certain amount of social pressure to answer one's telephone and if you choose not to do so, then you must have a 'valid' reason or excuse for not doing so...fascinating.

I hate the phone, but I certainly like having the accessibility of the cell phone. Especially when you live in a house with multiple people, I much prefer having my own phone so I can choose whether or not to answer a call.

Having the ability to call from wherever whenever is great so you CAN get in contact with people when with just landlines you had no option of doing so.

Plus most cell phones come with free long distance now anyway, so that's a saving over land lines where you have to pay extra for those calls.

Plus you can assign ringtones to particular numbers, so I can ignore a call from work without even having to look at the phone :p

theres nothing worse than hearing about somebody getting a new cell phone. i agree that peoples phones now own THEM, and remember... its just another way for some million dollar corporation to make money off of you (its working) and making you feel important (thats working, too) when you really arent.

I still have the thing. I like to go to camp (the cabin to alot of others) and there isn't a phone there but it turns my guts to have it any other time. Going to camp was a way to get away but since I've had kids, seems like I "need" to stay in touch. 'Uff da.

My "valid" excuse is usually one of the following:

* Haven't listened to my voice mail.
* Haven't had time to call back.
* Just didn't give a hoot.

I held off until 6 months ago when I got my first cell phone. I was starting to be concerned with the possibility of being stranded somewhere in my car and not being able to get help. I pretty much have it for emergencies only.

Dredging up my old thread. I still have my cell phone. Woe is me. The problem now is, the one I have is an old clunker. Does what I need it to do while out in the woods and that is get reception. The catch is, it's on its last legs. I take my wifes in the woods and I can't get reception where I can with the old one. Do any of you recommend a phone that has some kind of external antenna that will get good reception out in the sticks? I know part of it has to do with where the towers are, but the old one gets reception, new one doesn't. Thanks.

I have one, even though the only person who ever calls or texts me is the missus. :D

When I lived in the UK, I was a big advocate of pay-as-you-go phones - I hate being beholden to a company for any period of time, and would never sign a 2-year contract. I'd rather just buy the phone. Plus, people could still get hold of you if need be, even if you had no credit on your phone. Ideal for parents, really... you can still contact your kid, and not have to top up their phone to do it.

Here in the US though, PAYG is far less practical - you still have to pay for incoming calls, and you still have to top up every month or so or you get disconnected. If a European mobile phone operator tried to pull a stunt like that, they'd be bankrupt in a week.

I don't have a cell.
I'd like to get my wife one in case of an emergency.

For me, I don't want to be bothered. I'll get back to ya real soon (unlike you with a cell!).
Maybe I should get one 'cause of the times and it being such a hurry up, do it now, gotta have it this instant world - but to me it'd be like dragging a TV/DVD player around everywhere I go.

Same service provider? Check some of the construction specific phones out there, great reception and you can throw them against a wall, many times, and they will still work.

My cell phone was stolen about 3 months ago and I haven't had the funds to replace it with a new one. Still paying the fees and what not. Really sucks. But I don't have a landline so a cell phone is almost needed but I've been fine so far. Inconvinient at times but oh well.

Still using Alltel.

I did a little research and it seems that phone manufacturers are making their antennas internal on the phone due to the majority of people wanting sleek small phones. When they go internal, the reception isn't up to par with the older phones.

Anyone have a phone that has an external antenna? Maybe that's what I should be after.

Like I said a few posts up, construction specific phones. External antennas.
