I have seen, and heard that tone is generated from the fingers. When two players play the same rig it amazes me how different they sound. I would guess that one of our goals as players is to be able to emulate as many different sounds as possible using exclusively touch and technique. I think if we get too many effects and goodies early in our development it limits our ability to grow and generate different sounds on our own.

The only "effect" I use are my pickup fader and tone controls on my Fernandes 5-string (treble/bass). I play in a rock cover band.

I don't play out. I just play at home for my own enjoyment, but I use a Yamaha NE-1 just to smooth out my tone and shape it alittle. I also run a FullTone Bass Driver with the O.D. set on like 8 or 9..very minimal. I use that to get a teeny bit of warmth and some grit in my tone. I use the effects blend on my SWR WM2004 and run a really dry signal so its not too obvious.
I also have a bid on a Q-tron, but that would just be something fun to play around with. I can't see it being a permanent part of my tone. And if it was, it would be really subtle.
