At work I use only the right earbud. The left one only dangles and gets in the way. I can figure out the answer by doing it, but the question is can I cut off the left one? Will that make the right not work anymore? They’re apple earbuds with a lightning connection.

I don't think so, but I wouldn't recommend it.

At the very least, you will only get the right channel of anything recorded in stereo. If it's not recorded in mono as a lot of things aren't... You might be missing parts of what you are listening to all together.

It's also possible that it could default to mono but I don't know that for a fact so you might want to check. if it does I wouldn't see the harm and cutting it off although it probably would just be best to Pull-A-Part the split cord if it's one of those just long enough to where you can put the loose one down inside your shirt.

Because I only ever use the right earbud, I set the phone to mono audio already. I just get annoyed with that left earbud. It catches between my gut and the edge of the desk. I’ll give it a shot.

Is it that you just want to hear things going on around you also? If that was the case in it was me I would get some good open-air cans instead. Quality good sound when you need it and can turn down keep stereo sound and I still hear what's going on in the background should you need to.

Twist the left cable around the main cable going down and twisty tie it at the end. Like how a rope is small strands wrapped around each other.

Though, I and hearing professionals do not recommend the one ear thing as most people turn the sound up higher than usual to compete with the ambient sounds the other ear is hearing, causing hearing loss in the one earphone ear.

I listen to podcasts and not music the majority of the time at fairly low volume. There’s a big open space with occasional foot traffic to the left of my desk and I can’t hear people coming with both in, and I’ve gotten used to it. I don’t like actual full non earbud headphones.
