No you can't. Stop lying to yourself......

I am failing to see why having chops would have any bearing on how you respond to an obvious sarcastic comment like that. I suspect he might have been trying to be funny.

If I was you, I would have said "Groove?!? Shoot, that would get in the way of my chops" or something similarly sarcastic.

I once worked with a guy who would tell customers and anybody who would listen that the only car for him was a Corvett, he never mentioned that he didn't have a car, people thought he had a Vett. ;)

I suck at bass but atleast I'm fully aware that I suck. When I was younger I was in full suck denial. The alcohol and weed didn't help this condition either. Now that I'm older, sober, and a tad wiser I live my life by one simple rule.

I am an idiot. When I start thinking that I'm not an idiot disastrous decisions always follow.

Shut up Cory......;)

here's irony for those who think I went on a "I'm so good rant"- which I didn't:
Abbey Rondo Performing "Mr. Big Stuff" - YouTube

LOL!!!!
(and yes that's me playing bass....)

I was expecting a LOT more after the "I'm so much better than you" rant...I wasn't expecting such a complete LACK of groove...completely generic and faceless tone-wise and playing-wise. Could have been programmed keyboard bass.

I think that the comment posted on that Youtube video from 2 years ago sums it up best:

"No soul. Just plain awful. Why would this video exist?"

Maybe that kid at Guitar Center was on to something...

I don't know ya man, but it sounds like ya had other stuff on your plate when he popped off. You skin was a little see through that day ;)
Maybe he was being a smart alek, but really that is the way of things for those coming up. They want to test and prod, to find their place in the musical world. I would bet he was looking for you to be what you said you were, a teacher. It was a prime "teachable moment" to my mind. Don't beat yourself up ( I'm pretty sure you wont ) but you can always do better next time and who knows, maybe you'll see him again and strike up a mutually respectful conversation. Stranger things have happened.

It never makes sense to me UNLESS someone is TRYING to be a poop disturber, or possibly clueless as to how their comments COULD be taken, but "if you can't say anything nice....(don't say anything at all) I can barely play, but on occasion there is someone I hear when I think I may be more solid, etc, but I never tell that guy/kid/girl who is playing way to loud, sloppily, and out of tune anything snarky, as I was there once too, just never too loud! Mike can play VERY well, and is pretty modest, but also confident that he can get the job done, and guys who play like him make me often want to give up, but you grab that new something and realize HEY we can always get better.

I've never heard you play so i can't comment, but a lot of those technical demos on youtube are just that, they're not very musical. I think a lot of those guys do need to just groove........... more. But your argument works both ways, some guys only talk about groove because they lack technique, just like a lot of guys talk about technique because they have no groove.

The best players IMO have a lot of technique and a lot of groove, basically they love their instrument and they love music even more. But if i had to pick one or the other i'd pick groove everytime, if you're not grooving then your technique is wasted.

Like i said, i've never heard you play, you probably have all aspects of your playing together. But there are a lot of guys doing 100m sprints on their basses these days, only problem is they don't know where they're going.

Sorry to let you down. LOL!

Ahh.....love it!

And again, it wasn't a " I'm so better than you rant".....I'm just done with idiots who run their mouth like that.

Most of the YouTube comments I see about this sort of thing happen when a reviewer doesn't really demonstrate how an instrument sounds to the layperson or to the average amateur musician, and instead shows off a extended rote-learned gimmick or two of the reviewers chops, or his favorite rote-learned riff or pattern from one of his idols.

As far as guitar shop experiences go, the person who made the comment was way off base. Sure, we don't know exactly what motivated him to make such an uninvited remark, but even on those occasions where I've wanted to try out a bass in order to hear its fundamental bread-and-butter tone, but had to stand around waiting for 10 minutes for some wanker to stop playing the same repetitive high-volume 800-BPM thump-and-pop groove for that entire 10-minute duration (what, you couldn't tell how the bass felt and sounded after the first minutes or two of playing the exact same 2-second pattern and drowning out anyone else's attempts to actually try out an instrument???)... Even in those situations, I never felt the need to say a single word to them. It's just rude. Even if I had felt like being rude, it's doubtful they would have been able to hear me over the sound of how awesome the felt they were.

And I may be a mediocre bassist at best, but I can tell the difference between an highly-skilled bassist putting an instrument through its paces and trying out different techniques and levels thereof, and someone who is just wanking via some flashy repetitive technical gimmick. If the kid who made that unsolicited remark couldn't tell the difference, I think it would have been best to simply outwardly ignore him, and pity him in your heart.

well, first of all, as a gigging, working bassist, i'm surprised you didn't give him your card. at least mention something along the lines of "i must be doing something right, cuz my bills are getting paid."

secondly, youtube comments? seriously? i mean, did you actually post about -youtube comments-? :eyebrow::scowl:

this thread Smells Like Teen Spirit. :hyper: ;)

That's like my ideal tone! :hiding:

I noticed he slagged off Rickenbacker tone in his original post as well...funny thing, however, is that if he had been playing a Rick in that "Mr. Big Stuff" clip he would have had an actual notable identifiable tone instead of that generic unnoticeable tone that no one pays attention to nowadays...
