Nordstrand Basses

I own and have owned and played several of Carey's singecut basses. They are fantastic, and among the finest basses built today. He is still going to be building the custom stuff, but my understanding is that he's only going to be building them as he wants to build them, and not taking the ultra- whacky custom orders, etc. If Carey comes on here and corrects me, I apologize in advance....however, you can still order his new Nordy line though, and I have played several of them...they're freaking AWESOME basses, and play like butter! Contact Jay at Blueberryhill...he'll dial you in!

There are a lot of great builders our there that could do this for you. Not sure Carey (don't want to put words in his mouth, but just the way it looks) will be taking custom orders for some time.

My guess is-everyone on here knows how amazingly successful his pickups are and that IIRC, a variety of builders are now using his pickups. So what i think is, he's getting enough business through the pickup end of things where he can be picky about what he builds now or in the current case opted to suspend taking orders of the custom models, so he'd be finishing the ones that have already been ordered and then making another decision. Now i hope this is only temporary as the work that he has put out is nothing short of amazing, IMO.

His Nordy VJ basses are amazing. I've played the 5 string that Scott Pazera has at his shop, and man-it blew away right about everything i've ever played.

The major difference to me in the Nordy's vs. his custom models are.....bodies and necks are predone, there's a list of options, and the general production is more streamlined/less time consuming to build. That being said-i'm still amazed by how that specific bass plays and sounds. A pretty nice bass for reference that i was mentally comparing it to is a Lakland 55-94 [cept it had dual Js]. The catch-the Lakland needed a setup, and it wasn't at Scott's Shop-it was in one of my teacher's studio.

I love Carey's basses, there are really top notch. My issue is that when the production stops or radically slows down, the allure of getting a bass and the reality of the wait are too far apart for my money.

Personally I will not wait longer than 6 months to get a custom order. There are too many excellent luthiers that can deliver within that time frame.

I understand that Carey is busy and I think that's great. I am so happy for him and his family that this venture and leap of faith has paid off and I wish him all the success in the world. Hopefully he will find a way to move a bit faster without sacrificing quality. If that happens I can see myself waiting in line but for now there are guys like Chris Stambaugh, Mark Garza, Matt Pulcinella and Chris Benavente that are making some killer stuff within that 6 month window.

Of course, this is only my opinion and as I have said in here before, PLAY WHAT YOU LOVE!!!

Really happy that you're enjoying that bass. I never got to hear it with the proper pickups so I can only guess what it sound like now. It was simply put, the best built bass I've ever seen though, and that was Carey's first Nordstrand bass that he built for a customer. And yes, it is the only chambered bass he's done. Definately a one of a kind that you have there. If I hadn't had him make it with 28 frets I'd offer you loads of money (that I don't have) for it back.;)

Well, I guess your loss is my gain! :p I didn't realize you were the original owner - great choice on the "beeswing" redgum top.

Each of the nordie dual pickups sounds great soloed or near soloed, so there are a lot of great usable tones available. And the Aggie pre is matched really well with the bass - the way the mids are voiced allow for useful cutting and boosting.

Yup, that top is really special. I've never seen another one like it. I actually bought that from Cook Woods off of Ebay and sent it to Carey.
