No, what people are saying you're "ignorant" and "wrong" about is the ridiculous notion you have of fusion fans being geeks with tucked in t-shirts and high waisted trousers
I think he was making fun of Jaco's attire on the Shadows And Light video.
"Free Man In Paris" is (IMO) the best thing he ever did. The bass lines are freakin incredible.

Heavey weather and 8:30 are definately good places to start if one hasn't really been bitten by the Jaco bug yet, then again, so is his First solo album, or even his instrutional video that transcends style or genre.
Your honor, My client wishes the court to recognize that Mr Pastorius did in fact have rather high altitude trousers.

Jokes aside- he is also in fact one of my biggest bass playing influences since about 1991. More so because of his attitude towards learning and teaching- somewhat similar to that of Wooten rather than his playing in bands.
And yes- that DVD is killer. That bit where Jerry Jemmott asks him about his biggest influences and Jaco pulls out one of Jerrys lines is one of my favorite moments on film.

Context, folks... it matters. Wide bell bottoms started around 1974-75... and lasted more than a couple of years.

Also, not so much as far as basslines go, but IMO I think Word of Mouth has some of the best compositions of all time. John and Mary gets me every time!

Well, I think you just proved that you weren't too fashion-aware prior to 1974-5! Dunno how old you are Brad, but I'm old enough to know that wide bell bottoms were already the rage by the late 1960s...I have a photo of me standing in my family's back yard wearing some hysterical tye-dyed orange elephant bells in 1969. (I was 8 at the time.)
"Context"? Sorry, the only context where white trousers are acceptable is when you're a guest (or an employee) on a cruise ship, or a member of the chorus in a musical theater production. And the only context where tucking your shirt in & hiking said trousers up >4" higher than your waist is acceptable is when you're the resident of a nursing home.

As far as fashion aware goes, I'm sure you bought your own clothes and chose the styles.
And there's you're problem... talking about where they "are" acceptable. This has nothing to do with how things are, it's about how they "were".
The trousers weren't hiked up, they were made with a high waistband. Back then. They used to make shirts with a built-in waistband too. Back then. That's the context you're still not getting.

The point was that people just don't grasp the fact that something may look funny in hindsight that's in fashion now. If you weren't around then you have a filtered notion at best of what fashion was.

When I hear bass players talk about Jaco it's like two fat old bald guys standing on a corner as Paris Hilton walks by and one saying to the other "she's really not that hot" Here is the point, If Jaco had a dress on in the Shadow and Lights video, he still would have been a "Great Bass Player" Okay now try and keep with me here... Jaco did more for the evolution of the electric bass then Jimmy Hendrix did for the evolution of the electric guitar. 
And not only was he a great bass player, he was an over all great musician.
Look if you don't like Jaco that's cool with me. If you can't make it through every track on a Wether Report recording that's cool too. I think it's really cool that you found a style of music that you like and Jaco just happened to be the bass player. But I don't think it's cool when some one who couldn't play their way through a Blues Standard critiques the style, note choice or amount of notes played by any Jazz Musician.
Want to hear something that your small little 1 4 5 ears might like. Look for Ian Hunter's recording All American Alien Boy. Jaco plays on that one as well.
