He sure is amazing on Joni Mitchell's Hejira (and i think he is on Mingus too.)
Very restrained and tasteful.
I am not into his more well known stuff (solo album and weather report) but that is not because it's not great... I'll just admit it... I am an unsophisticated listener (another way of aying not much into jazz.) I am more of a fan of The Who or Tool... but I like to relax to Joni Mitchell (actually just getting into her.)
Anyways if anyone wants to check out some incredible restrained jaco playing check out those 2 albums.

It has been close to 30 years ago but I remember his solo where he looped a line and then soloed over it- it was sweet. I am not a jazz expert, but his playing gave me the distinct impression that anything was possible on the electric bass!
