He sure is amazing on Joni Mitchell's Hejira (and i think he is on Mingus too.)

Very restrained and tasteful.

I am not into his more well known stuff (solo album and weather report) but that is not because it's not great... I'll just admit it... I am an unsophisticated listener (another way of aying not much into jazz.) I am more of a fan of The Who or Tool... but I like to relax to Joni Mitchell (actually just getting into her.)

Anyways if anyone wants to check out some incredible restrained jaco playing check out those 2 albums.

I was a huge Joni Mitchell fan before Hejira came out, the Gods themselves couldn't have planned for a more beautiful artistic meeting. I think if I was on my death-bed, going out listening to Hejira would be the way to go.

I'll respectfully opine that by the time Shadows And Light came out Jaco had already let a bit of the deification go to his head, resulting in some, uh, shall we say, less-than-tasteful moments. I'm way more impressed by his playing on Joni's Don Juan's Reckless Daughter where it seems like the synergy between his brilliant bass playing and her cinematic musical vision was at its apex. His entrance with the drums on "Overture/Cotton Avenue" makes me besmirch myself every time I hear it!

That's a good disc. The edition I have is encoded in HDCD and sounds incredible. Larry Carlton is on this recording as well. It's been mentioned before, but for more 'non-Weather-Report' Jaco, check out Pat Matheny's Bright Sized Life.

yea i love Don Juans Reckless Daughter as well, 'Talk to Me' is a highlight off that album. I wud love to hear what Jaco would of done with that song live considering that there is 3 or 4 different bass tracks on that tune.

IMO jaco's best work was with Joni.

I remember seeing Jaco play w/ Joni on a cable special many years ago- I was absolutely stunned :crying: It has been close to 30 years ago but I remember his solo where he looped a line and then soloed over it- it was sweet. I am not a jazz expert, but his playing gave me the distinct impression that anything was possible on the electric bass!

Aw cmon.
Apologies all round- I didnt mean to offend anyone.

Just because I don't like Weather report doesn't make me either "ignorant" or "wrong". I appreciate it, I think they're brilliant players etc.. but it doesn't float my boat and I see no problem in saying so.

Its funny- My grandfather used to play trad jazz banjo in dance halls. He thinks I'm ignorant and wrong to listen to Thelonius Monk as anything beyond 50s jazz is not real music.

No, what people are saying you're "ignorant" and "wrong" about is the ridiculous notion you have of fusion fans being geeks with tucked in t-shirts and high waisted trousers :rollno:
