Not quite a P bass...

It would take some creative EQing to make this bass work with anything other than solo stuff. On the amp or preamp pedal, I would crank the bass and dim the mids and highs. This might give you a workable tone to support and blend in the mix.
If it had a blendable piezo bridge and good preamp, put me down for a "Maybe."
I suppose - for a less extreme example - that's how one-pickup StingRays can, well, not be one-trick ponies. Native tone is a little biased, EQ's there, bam, why not use it.

I'm not seeing the problem. Lot's of bassists play a J bass with only the bridge pickup.
