Notes on E string bad sound.

Just a thought...if you find that you're getting more "warbling" of the notes as you go up the neck, try lowering the pickup and see if anything changes. If the pickup is too high, you get the magnetic field of the pickup interfering with the vibration of the string and it can have that effect. Sometimes the E string (since it has the most magnetic material) can be singularly affected.
 
I love to play "Good Times Bad times" Up at the 12th fret on the E string. All my bass have a very usable E string in the higher register.
I don't know why anyone would think it's normal to not be able to use your E string up there.
Sure, Maybe you don't want to but it's definitely not normal..
