The solo Matthew Garrison takes on this track really haunts me! The part at 5:22 is especially beautiful. A friend played it for me the other day and he really likes that part too (he plays bass trumpet).

What other obscure Brazilian?

I've been getting way into Brazilian lately, ever since I started playing classical guitar again. I've always loved Jacob do Bandolim, Luiz Bonfá, Baden Powell, the Gilbertos and Jobim, Hermeto Pascoal and Vinícius Cantuaria but only relatively recently have I discovered Raphael Rabello, Armandinho, Vinícius de Moraes, the Abreu and Assad brothers, Radamés Gnattali, Toqhinho, Jorge Ben, Grupo Batuque and Guillermo Klein (though he's Argentine).

Guillermo, in particular, has had a huge effect on me. I got to see him perform at the Village Vanguard earlier this year and it was indescribable. His ensemble was half South Americans and half New Yorkers. Seeing Guillermo with Jeff Ballard on drums, Ben Monder on guitar and Fernando Huergo on headless 5-string fretless was enough for me!
