NPD DSM Noisemaker OmniCabSim

I used my V1 in the studio this weekend recording my new band's EP. Rick 4003 - VMTD - OCS. However, the DI went out on me during rehearsal the day prior to the studio, so I ran 1/4" out to a Radical DI.

.
I haven't had a chance to look at it closely, but will definitely check the pins. Just odd that it quit working.
I had one unit which had an xlr pin sunken (by pushing it hard with the plug at the wrong position) easy fix, just push the pin back to the right position.. If the pins are ok, i will gladly repair it.

The deluxe has a much more improved DI out..

Well I have finally had a chance to play my OCS deluxe through my cabs at home and I gotta say... It is a very transparent, versatile tone shaping tool. I haven't got into the DI or headphone outs etc just yet - but in the signal chain... It sounds very good.

One thing I was a bit surprised by however is how "up front" and open the character of this pedal is. It's fairly transparent... But seems to unveil the cab by boosting frequencies in the right places as per the setting. Some very nice sounds in there for sure. Unfortunately for me... I find it's difficult to do the opposite equally well- darkening my cabs musically and efficiently to sound more vintage. To my ear, this pedal doesn't "cut" quite as well as it "boosts" from an EQ perspective if that makes any sense? I admit that my initial expectations were (expecting vintage tones) simply out of line with what it actually does well (more aggressive/modern tones) and even though I bought this to tame overly modern cabs - it just so happens to sound really good through pretty much everything!

This is a great pedal in many ways and I haven't really dug into the full potential yet so please consider my comments as initial thoughts! Thanks again DSM for the cool pedal. I'll be playing with this one some more and keep you all posted my my thoughts.

Have you tried turning down the High Response a lot? I mean like 8 o'clock, 9 o'clock. And also turning down the Cab Size quite a bit, 12-1 o'clock, with Resonance fairly high. I also like to have the Mid Response close to max and Punch fairly low to get a more vintage tone.

I'm not sure exactly the sound you're aiming for, but I would use the settings above as a starting point. Do you have an example of what the sound you're looking for?
I guess it could also be the case that your cabs have an inherent sound that is difficult to overcome (lots of mid scope or similar?!). Just guessing here really.

Cheers,
Kalle

Well I'm not really aiming for anything in particular - but I was expecting the ability (for some reason) to make a full range cab sound fat and thick, kinda dark and vintage I guess and still remain nice and natural/musical. I tried all kinds of settings similar to your suggestions and I can get there but it's not as rich sounding as the settings on the other side of the spectrum I guess. it's obvious to me that I need to spend some more time with it. Like I said... my initial impression is that its harder to dail in a musical vintage tone than a modern one whilst sounding like there's no processing going on.
And again, its a great sounding -versatile pedal that I am enjoying!

It just turns out I've pretty much decided that I like it best with my Barefaced retro TWO10 cab vs. my EAVL's or CXL310 - which is just the opposite of what I was expecting! :woot:

Its all good .. just not what the old brain had in mind since I pre-ordered several months ago.

As a 100% DI guy, I couldn't agree more. I'm even contemplating the idea of getting a spare one :roflmao:

I'm curious how many are running the effected 1/4 out to a power amp. If so good predictable results? Or weird combination due to redundant "cabs".

My OCSDeluxe is last on my board, DI to FOH. I'm running an Ampeg Portaflex500 and Carvin 4x10 ported cab with tweeter. I'm going straight to the classD power amp via series FX return. B7Kultra preamp and Broughton L/HPF ahead of OCSD.

I don't have the option to do full volume testing, i mostly use the headphone out for tone tweaking. I just want a sense of what I'm getting into in live settings if i run the effected out vs. Non-affected thru.

Any input would be appreciated. I guess i feel that straight into classD power amp is very flat and linear, no real tube or vintage mojo. And the Carvin 4x10 is more of the same.

This to me is ideal as ALL of my "tone" is coming from my board and not my amp. Making IEM or shared generic back lines extremely easy.

And a sincere THANK YOU to the builder, absolutely brilliant unit.

I run the effected 1/4 to my Crest Pro 2.0 which powers a fEarful 12/6. The DI from the OCS to FOH. The awesome thing is that I ALWAYS know that my stage tone is exactly what is being heard our front. That's the great thing with a preamp/poweramp and transparent cabinet rig.

I run the effected 1/4 into the amp's input, running into a Barefaced Big Twin II with the tweeter fully open. Amp is set as flat as I could (so the result is quite similar to running directly into a flat-response power amp I guess?), but with the possibility of tweaking to eliminate problematic frequencies (semi-parametric EQ).

FOH is fed through the amp's DI out on "pre" mode (nothing wrong with the OCS's DI out, just more convenient to have the cable hooked up to the amp rather than to the pedalboard).

This is the perfect solution to me, so far : I can use whatever gear is provided by the venue without it affecting my tone, and I'm free to tweak the stage sound without affecting the FOH.
Everyone's happy !
