Double Bass NS Design NXT Megathread

So I’m trying to get back into bowing after years of not using one, and I need some new rosin. Last kind I had was Carlsson’s, but I’m so inexperienced with bowing that I don't know if that's a good starting point or if I should try something different. Anyone here have suggestions? @Mark Gollihur , could you make any recommendations?
FWIW, I live in north Texas, but I mainly play in my air conditioned home. I normally play mostly jazz, but I’m about to start giving my Vance books a workout.

The Carlsson's should work well, considering the heat. But you might really enjoy a more premium rosin, for reduced flakiness and more consistent response. The difference in cost when you get it seems considerable (can be double, or more, compared to more "common" rosins), but it's such a small, long-lasting thing it's kind of negligible. The Kolstein Ultra rosin has always been popular (I'd get the AW/All Weather, not the soft, for Texas) and the new Wiedoeft rosin is based on a classic formula, and it's pretty amazing - folks have been raving about it.

It is generally recommended to upgrade tuners to the HipShot when using a B. This was done by a prior owner on mine. Works good.
I had to increase the size of the through hole and backing washer when changing from the stock Contemporary to Traditionals. It's quick and painless; I have a thread about it here.
It's -possible- a slight nut adjustment could be required.

I did the upgrade to Hipshot tuners this year. It's literally the easiest thing in the world. They fitted perfectly. And feel way more secure /stable

Sure have; they're on my WAV4.
I find them good for pizzicato - clear and punchy. Arco, not so good.
Thanks. I've got a set that I've been meaning to try on my NXT5 for months, but haven't gotten around to it. I play easily 90% pizzicato, but some arco (usually heavily processed). Do they actively suck for arco, or just meh?

Well, I actively suck at arco, so there's that factor, as well as the comparison to my other EUB, which wears Spirocores and sounds wonderful. That said, it just sounded harsh to my ears; depending on the processing, it could sound OK.
That leads to the question: what kind of processing do you usually use?

I originally bought my NXT in order to learn arco, but the pizz tone was so awesome that I haven't been putting much time into it, and the only gigs I've done have been pizz for jazz. So far, I'm only playing arco in an electronic music context, running the NXT through a Fishman pre, then into a laptop where I process it with Guitar Rig - distortion, delay effects, space effects, etc. So a harsh tone on the input might even be a "good" thing. I already own the set, so I guess I might as well try 'em out.

I was thinking about trying it from here, to record the result. I've been out of practice due to moving house, and this would be a good nudge for me to pick up the lesser-used one, you see :)

So now I'm going to dig further, because I want to crib your ideas for my own use. What exactly do you mean by "space effects"? Reverb, or space-rock stuff?

I picked up an hx stomp last week but hadn't tried my nxt with it until yesterday. I realized that I could use the Mic preamp that's in the stomp and skip the platinum stagethat I've been using for it. Does anyone that has a stomp do this?

The Stomp is my go-to setup with my NXTa. Check out my post #1621 on the previous page that will link you back to some of my previous posts (including a dropbox link for audio) where I've discussed using it for delay and IRs to make the NXT sound more realistic. Added bonus: the Stomp also opens up a world of Primus tones... overdrive, envelope filter, reverb, etc all on electric upright.

In related news, 3Sigma has a couple new acoustic upright impulses that might be worth checking out for anyone here that might be using IRs. The Mod Bass is on my list to try.
