Double Bass NS EUB megathread

Quick update to be followed hopefully by a review of the whole set:

In terms of pitch focus and just about everything else, the Superflex B I put on is far and away a significant improvement over the Corelli TX that preceded it. It's fatter at .146, but much more flexible(!) and there is actual fundamental content that was completely absent from the TX.

The only issue is the fit to the bass as this is a 4/4 string on a 3/4 bass. I swapped the B and A at the tuning box and so far so good. My concern now is that the 4/4 E string may be too long for it's tuning post. I know there is a 3/4 set, but the gauges are different, not sure how different.

Hi everybody!
I am waiting for a new NS EUB CR5M to come next week.
But Im completely blind about EUB strings.
I really really need advises from you guess, as of what strings/brand, type ,gauges for use on the EUB.,especially for the low B string.
For your information,I play jazz,pop and little bowing .
no classical at all.
I intend to get a low action set up.
Any advises/experiences would be very much welcome.

My NSD came with Flexocores. They are very old but it still sounds great. I think that rec came from Francois that the previous owner followed.

I use Spiro solos on my Yamaha EUB because I needed something super low tension. Worked out beautifully.

IMO, the flexocors are pretty low on the NSD as it is. You could do EB style slapping the way mine are. I wish my Yamaha sounds like the NSD does, but I prefer the overall feel of the Silent Bass as it feels like an acoustic. The flexocors are great for both arco and pizz.

Ok, some clarifications were asked:

Spiro is the most frequent diminutive for Spirocore.
This brand is made by Thomastik-Infeld in Austria.

The Spirocore is probably the most popular jazz bass string.
It's available in lots of lenghts, gauges, etc.

The Corellis are available in five strings sets.

The low B/C is somewhat hard to find, and quite costly too.
($108 a piece from Lemur Music)

The Spirocore costs about $60.

Hi guys!
Im currently looking for a CR5M G
I noticed that the Graphite inlaid models is no longer offered in the NS site.Do you kbow why?is it a product failure?
Does any body ever have one?do you encounter problems due to the graphite.for instance in rod adjustment.

My pleasure, Robert.
The Corellis are known to be very good arco strings.
François Rabbath endorses them.
The Spirocores are known to be less arco-friendly, although some players use them.

Solo-tuning is a whole step above orchestra tuning.
Thus F# B E A.
These strings are thinner, so you can also use them at regular orchestra pitch, in extra-light gauge.

Hey Suresh.

I noticed this as well, that they aren't listed on the main page, but the model is still found under the 'double basses' tab in the menu.

I have an EU6 and have no problems due to the graphite, and I'm not sure what kind of problems would arise from using this material.

As for the future of the EU models, it's possible that a low demand compared to the CR series combined with a relatively expensive construction could cause this model to be discontinued.

You could always call up their customer service number. In my few occasions of speaking with NS, their customer service has been exemplary.

I was wandering if they ceased producing the Graphite inlaid CRM-G models due to negative feedbacks from customers.
Cause Ive heard that graphite reacts differently compared to wood.Also adjusting the rods must be done extra careful.

Hi Guys!
greetings to the NSDB owners.
I hv a question that I need ananswer fast,cause Im in the middle of ordering a CR5MG.
Is this model having an ebony board with graphite inlaid bars
or does it hv full graphite fingbd.?
How does it sound?
Also if any of you could suggest a good priced dealer around San Fransisco.

Though I can't say for sure, I would think it's either all graphite or all ebony for a fingerboard.

the -G refers to the graphite board, yes? and not to the EU model's graphite/maple laminate body construction.

For the Bay Area, I'd call Ed at Gelb music in Redwood City. A cooler bass gear cat can't be found.

Thanks guys! youare all being very helpful!
Now that Im completely new at EUB's, and just starting to play and bow,what strings do you suggest that is most friendly/less damaging to the bow and Ebony.
I ll replace with something better/expensive when Im ready for gigs.
Any infos would be much appreciated.
