Odd conversation with the wife today...

So, I have a growing collection of basses. I am currently working on a kit bass that will be #14. I am painting it metallic purple with a white pearl pickguard and gold hardware.

I have another bass, a Squier Sonic Bronco, in the web exclusive purple color.

Now, my wife has stated that my son, who is also a bassist, gets all of my bass stuff except for these two purple basses, which she intends to keep.

So here is the strange part...she looks at me today and says, "You need to teach me how to play. When you're gone, and I have these basses, I want to be able to play them and remember you."

Now, I gotta say, I love my wife with every fiber of my being. She is absolutely amazing and supports me in every aspect of my life, especially my music. For heaven's sake, she was the one that told me to go back to the pawn shop and drop the $3k for the Ric 4001! Never flinched. Never said, "let's talk about this" it was just, "GO GET IT!"

So, now, I guess I am going to teach my wife how to play bass.

You are lucky.,My wife wants me to write down the value so she knows what to sell them for. She is assuming I will go first which is worrisome.

Great for the OP. Hope it works out for you. I think my wife will hold on to most of my gear because it was mine. She's quite sentimental. She may loan or donate one of my cheaper ones but would hold onto my best ones. I can't see her selling any.
She's not a musician either, and has no desire to learn.

Agree. I love my wife dearly but I would never try to teach her how to play. It would be worse than hanging wallpaper together.

My wife was upset that a dog is considered man's best friend. She maintains that a spouse should be considered my best friend. So I locked them both in the trunk of my car and drove around for 20 minutes. Guess which one was happiest to see me when I let them out?

Our marriage is not normal. We rarely have disagreements and we have great communication. I am pretty sure I can get her the basics at least and she will be happy. I think she just wants to be able to do something with those two basses when I'm gone.

In my case, it is very likely that I will go first. She's 10-1/2 years younger than I am. (Insert cradle robbing jokes here.) The fact that my son is a bassist is beneficial as almost all the music gear will go to him. The purple basses, though, well, that's her favorite color, so that is her reasoning for wanting to keep them and learn at least a little about playing.

My wife is awesome! Just look at this face! She has this starry eyed wonder look every time I am on stage playing. Pretty sure she's more than just a little crazy about me.

Besides, she wants the cheap, purple basses (Squier Bronco and a kit built bass), not the Ric 4001 or the American Fenders.

Im in a similar situation, 13 years difference…except shes a grave digger, she asked me out, anyways as females normally live longer than males its a reasonable thing to talk about, figuring out what to do with your stuff, very cool that she wants to learn!

It was quite the shock when she said she wanted to learn. I never would have expected her to be interested. She played flute when she was in school, but never touched it again after she graduated. I asked her recently if she'd be interested in learning a couple of classic rock songs that had flute in them and she could join the band for those couple of songs and she flatly declined.

I will say, though, that around 6 months ago, I had an ex-girlfriend from about 20 years ago reach out to me. We are connected on Facebook and she has known for a long while that I am a bass player. She wanted to get started playing and asked for my assistance. Her issue was that she is left handed and wanted help finding a great bass to get started on. I just happened to know where there was a lefty MIM Fender Precision that had been hanging in a pawn shop since November of 2020. She came up and stayed the night with my wife and I and we went and got it for her the next day. She got a heck of a deal on it! The bass, leather strap and hard case for $500 cash out the door. At the time, my wife thought it was awesome that I was helping my ex-girlfriend get started in playing and helping her to get a good deal. however, when it was all said and done, she said to me, "I don't know that I could learn something new like that this late in my life." I told her that it was never too late! So...here we are.
