Oddest question asked in an audition...

I was thinking about auditions and things you get asked at them by band members. This is something I was asked by the leader of a funk band that i joined in South Carolina a few years back..

It was a great band and I was absolutely thrilled to be a part of it, and I was the only white guy in the band (not that it matters) thus I got dubbed white chocolate by the band..lol Anyway at the audition the band leader asked me; "are you looking to steal all the girls in the audience from us"? I was frozen for a second wondering why he asked that, but quickly recovered and said...of course, I love black women..lolol...apparently it was a good answer because he laughed and said, you're in!...

Same audition he also asked me if I was the kind of guy that would just leave or take off unannounced..I said no..then he told me a story of a girl singer they had that disappeared for 7 months, no communication from her and no answers from calls or texts..he said she showed up out of the blue one day and asked, when is our next gig?...lolol...

Well, if it was Painted Man, I am duly impressed!

So I auditioned for a hard rock band and I was clearly not a fit. They were playing stuff that I just couldn't hear. Stuff with bass lines that were hard to hear in the mix.....no back melody at all...maybe you know what I'm talking about. I said "sorry I'm just not feelin' it fellas". The guitarist says "yeah, thanks for coming out, I think you'd be better off playing in a band that covers Grand Funk Railroad......"

But I suppose the oddest thing I was directly asked was "do you mind if I go outside to be sick?" by an auditioning singer. I kind of sympathised, takes nerve to be a singer.

Our singer (who I was married to, now she's my ex) once ran offstage, straight out the back door of the club, and threw up in the dumpster out back. She also threw up in the parking lot of a restaurant once - she said "pull over", I did, squealing tires to make the turn, turning lots of heads in the place (a diner with big windows), and we ended up right next to the place, with her door open, and her vomiting right in front of them.

Of course, both times, she overserved herself.

Kinda glad she's my ex now.

I once drove straight through from a gig in Colorado via Bozeman Montana to an audition in Nashville. After the audition and it being obvious I had the gig, they told me I'd need to bleach my hair blond. After a long pause before responding, they told me I'd be okay if I just colored it something and maybe got a mohawk or something, since it was nearly black. 1983 was quite a year.

yeah, that's how he rolls, usually (depending on circumstances). we played several dates without rehearsals that 'tour', but we were indoctrinating a few different players because of the nature of that one event.

Yeah, the early 80's was all about the look. I got asked more than once if I had to wear my glasses or would I be willing to wear a wig? Then to see lesser players get the gigs.

I took the hint and decided I should probably get a trade.

Yes I have one, a very long time ago, I was once asked if I knew how to tune a 6 string guitar? Which I answer yes why?
and the guy said that his guitarist was tone deaf, I jokingly said I hope he's not the singer

this was in Japan... One guy asked me, "You're not a Ninja, are you? Last guy we had was a weirdo and he was a Ninja."

I was like, "Yeah, no, I don't even own a black t-shirt." He never knew that I actually WAS a Ninja....

That's so ninja.

I auditioned for a band that used seven-string guitars, so I showed up with one of my four-string basses set up for BEAD or AEAD tuning, with appropriately heavy strings, adjustments to truss and saddles to accommodate, etc. The B (or A) string sounded surprisingly great on that bass.

They asked me if I would be willing to buy a five-string bass because they "sound heavier."

Technically, the extra string and wider neck do make them heavier... ;-)

That was totally one of my motivations when I bought my 5-string Warwick - I needed some heavy metal credibility that my low-strung Ibanez p-bass wasn't getting for me.

Don't think I've ever really auditioned. Maybe once when I was a teenager and I joined a gigging band. Ever since then I've just got calls asking me to come play.

Or a set list... I knew a guy who backed Chuck Berry, and he said Chuck showed up about 5 minutes before the show started, and nobody had any idea what song he was going to launch into next. Then Chuck got all pissy (on stage) because the band couldn't read his mind.
