Oddest question asked in an audition...

I was thinking about auditions and things you get asked at them by band members. This is something I was asked by the leader of a funk band that i joined in South Carolina a few years back..

It was a great band and I was absolutely thrilled to be a part of it, and I was the only white guy in the band (not that it matters) thus I got dubbed white chocolate by the band..lol Anyway at the audition the band leader asked me; "are you looking to steal all the girls in the audience from us"? I was frozen for a second wondering why he asked that, but quickly recovered and said...of course, I love black women..lolol...apparently it was a good answer because he laughed and said, you're in!...

Same audition he also asked me if I was the kind of guy that would just leave or take off unannounced..I said no..then he told me a story of a girl singer they had that disappeared for 7 months, no communication from her and no answers from calls or texts..he said she showed up out of the blue one day and asked, when is our next gig?...lolol...

"You need to turn your mids down, you're stepping into guitar territory." "I'm using two pickups, and my mids are dipped a little. I think you might need to up yours a little,and maybe cut your bass. Then the keys won't stomp you out like I'm hearing." "No man, it's your mids." "Okay" (cut mids). (guitarist) "I think the bass need to come up more, I can't hear you" (roll eyes) "Okay" "Yeah, that's perfect" "I just turned up my mids."

That actually happened. Hahahaha. That's about it though. A lot of things said/asked are weird with guys I play with. We're weirdos, and we're not shy.

Great thread. Reminds me of some great ads looking for musicians to audition.
Back in the 80s, my favorite was the line "...looks, hair, and attitude a must." (This was in Boston)

They should just say "image more important than ability".

So Anyway, I get a call from a local BL who I'd never met:

BL: Jimmie, do you got yourself a yella shirt?
Me: Why yes, I do own a yellow shirt.
BL: Well find yourself on down to the tavern by the railroad tracks in Smithton tonight at 8:00. I got some work for ya.

So my audition was owning a yellow shirt.

When I first moved to Colorado in the early 90s I responded to an ad in the back of a local newspaper for an "alternative" band looking for a bass player. I called and spoke to the BL, everything was going pretty well, them came the question... "what do you look like?" I figured we were getting along pretty well so I told him I looked like Gene Shalit, but with a bushier moustache. The dude hung up on me. I thought it was funny...

OK. This post isn't about a band audition, but a job interview generally. When you are 59 years old (58 this time last year at my job interview) you can get by with stuff you can't as a younger person. What came to mind during my interview was the scene in Shawshank Redemption when Red (Morgan Freeman) gives his last speech to the parole board. Rehabilitated? – Speech – Stories and Quotes from the Mind* and Keyboard of A.A.Forringer The day of the interview I had been unemployed (meaning - no day job) for over a year, and just like Red I was finally to the point of not giving a $#!+. The office manager asked the question that you ask new graduates: where do you see yourself in five years? My answer: I never, ever, ever want to have to do another job interview ever again! The office manager called me the next day and hired me then and there. It has turned out to be the best job of my long career.

One time at a music store, I was noodling on an acoustic electric bass and a guy walks up and says, "Hey, you play pretty good, I would like you to audition for a band I'm putting together"! I said, sure why not? He then asked how old I was, told him I was 39. Long uncomfortable pause. I ask is that a problem, he stammers and says, no, not all. Gave him my phone number but never got a call from him. Right now, he's older than I was when he asked me, and his bass player is older than I am now.By the way, I was hoping he would've called just so I could say no thanks.

Once I was auditioned by a rock band. I brought my Steinberger 5 string I used to own. Everything went well and after the audition the singer told me I'm in, but then asked if have a "real bass". I brought my black P bass the next time, and everyone was happy.

similar .... i was asked why i left several past jobs, i gave standard politically correct responses , and the question was asked again this happened a third time.... I looked the guy square in the eyes, and said "because they pissed me off" he said right then and there .. "Your hired".... He was looking for someone to help him change the culture of the place, and was pushing to see if i could do it. I will be retiring from that job in a couple more years. and we really did change the culture, and brought the company out of the 19th century and into the 21st.
