Oddest question asked in an audition...

Same audition he also asked me if I was the kind of guy that would just leave or take off unannounced..I said no..then he told me a story of a girl singer they had that disappeared for 7 months, no communication from her and no answers from calls or texts..he said she showed up out of the blue one day and asked, when is our next gig?...lolol...

No mystery there.

Hope her baby was healthy.

Oddest question I ever got at an audition: “you’re the one. Do you want the gig?”

it was an audition for singer, in a Rolling Stones cover band. I was never a Stones fan, and I certainly don’t sing anything like Mick Jagger. In fact, no one with any sense would ever consider me a lead singer; I just don’t have that kind of voice. I did the audition as a lark.

But I heard a few of the other guys who auditioned :roflmao:. Odd thing is the band played Stones tunes fairly well! But clearly they were having trouble finding a singer if I was the guy who won the audition lol

You should have said "Yeah, I know. She was with me for those seven months".

As what I suspect was an icebreaker to lighten the mood, I was asked if I was in the witness protection program.

My response was that I'd been out since my last relocation, but if you see anyone parked outside in a blacked out van... don't worry about it... That's probably Dave checking on me. After messing around through the audition I was offered the gig but had to turn it down due to some scheduling issues. If anything it helped to establish a positive reputation and establish some contacts.

I was not really auditioning for this band as I already knew them and the job was mine before we first got together. They were together for a few years and guitarist quit and the other guitarist who was playing bass was going back to guitar.

It was a band that only played at weddings, parties, and private events and was called Private Affair. They said that they all wore matching powder blue, double knit, tuxedos for the gigs and wanted to now if I would wear the tuxedo of the guitarist who quit. Now, this was 1991 and the tuxedos were from the 1970s.

Here was how I got out of that. I am 6 feet tall and the other guy is about 5 foot 6 inches tall and a different build than me. I said that I would be happy to wear nice dress pants, shirts, ties, and shoes but we did not need to all dress alike. They were happy I said that and things went great.

"what the hell were you playing?" BL after the first and only gig that band ever played. he fired everyone on the spot. it was a pickup gig.

"can you count?" MD, at a rehearsal for a national act backup band...he was actually miscounting. o_O

"can you play simple...like one note?" chuck berry, during the singular rehearsal before a gig. :)

"can you buy me a drink?" drummer: first and only time i ever played with him. :wideyed:

"wanna buy some ______?" same drummer. :rollno:

"mind if i use a click?" drummer (currently with an internationally renowned rock act) --- on a jazz gig. :vomit:

edit: i can see that i didn't exactly answer the question exactly: "audition" --- my apologies. i'll let it stand as-is since we have a need for entertainment, generally!

Auditioned for what would be a three piece band. The audition was at the singer\guitar players house. I get there and as I am setting up my gear the singer says his wife will watch the entire audition and that regardless of what he or the drummer thinks she will be the sole factor if I get the gig or not. Finish the audition and she says "well you play pretty good but since you don't smoke weed you can't be in the band" MMM K since that was discussed before I ever drove over to the house why even bother with the audition?? She looked right at me and said "huh"?

this was in Japan... One guy asked me, "You're not a Ninja, are you? Last guy we had was a weirdo and he was a Ninja."

I was like, "Yeah, no, I don't even own a black t-shirt." He never knew that I actually WAS a Ninja.... ;):woot:
Like anyone who was a Ninja would admit to being a Ninja.:)

Anyway, I auditioned for this country band once. The BL asked me " Do you want to make money?"
I answered "yes". He said "be at this place at this time".
I showed up to the gig (a VFW hall). After the gig was over the BL asked me "do you want to make money?"
I said "yes" figuring that he would pay me for the gig. He then proceeded to tell me all about this company called Amway and how I could be a part of it and make money. I actually kept playing with this guy off and on for years and at almost every gig he would ask me " do you want to make money?"
I never did any of the Amway stuff.

Not an audition situation but...One afternoon I was taking lunch from my day gig in a local music shop noodling on their recent bass arrivals. I'm sitting there on a stool playing some blues lines when a guy comes up to me and says, "Do you play bass?" Reverting to my usual smart aleck self I kind of jumped back on the stool, looked down and said, "Is that what this is?" He looked at me funny and asked me if I was interested in auditioning for a blues/country band. I told him not really but I'll jam sometime.

He takes my number and calls a few days later and invites me to a jam that night so I go and things worked out fairly well. So started an association that lasted a bit over 20 years in various configurations playing up and down the local coast. I still play in a jazzy duo with one of the substitute guitarists.

Long-haired EVH wannabe guitarist/bandleader: "If you join our band, you'll ditch your glasses, right?"
Me, wanting what looked like a promising gig: "Uh, yeah, sure."

I got the gig, lasted 3 days in the band because I could not stand the leader. He had a lot more issues than telling people not to wear glasses.

Oh yeah- the band went nowhere, so no big loss....

"Did the bass get a bit lost there" asked an extremely up-himself pianist after skipping two entire staves on the score and refusing to admit his mistake. I gave him my most withering stare and left. Had the same thing with a jazz guitarist recently, messes up and openly blames the bass. I'm sure we all know that if you hit a bum note you say nothing but just glare at another player.

But I suppose the oddest thing I was directly asked was "do you mind if I go outside to be sick?" by an auditioning singer. I kind of sympathised, takes nerve to be a singer.
