I stated playing bass around age 16, within a year of 1st learning guitar. About 6 of us, sitting around playing G-L-O-R-I-A...E, D, A.
#1: "Hey, we should start a band!"
#2: "Well, bands don't have this many guitarists"
#3 "I got a line on some drums...and a bass!"
(me) "What's a bass?"
#3: "Here"
(me) "only 4 strings? No barre chords? Lemme see that thing" (Bass was a Danelectro, gave it back to the guitarist-turned-drummer when I got my own...still wish I'd kept it.)
Well, I learned to play barre chords...but bass became the real deal for me back then, 40+ years ago. I took about 10 years off to start my marriage & a family, but returned to playing...20 years ago.

4. Played piano as a kid but fell in love with bass via Stanley Clarke in the 70s, saw Jaco live, yadda, yadda. Fast forward to Xmas 2007, when Santa left an Ibanez under the Xmas tree. I've been taking lessons ever since and recently actually jammed with a live human!
Going to see Victor and Stanley tomorrow night. Bass heaven, for sure!

I was 11 when my big brother taught me my first chord on an acoustic guitar (1970). IIRC, started playing bass mid teens (16 yo? around 1975) on an old Guild 335 hollow body (played my first gig). Went pro in 1980 (actually made enough money to live on) and have been doing it pretty steadily since then. Semi-retired in 2007 and got a 'real job'. Hated it. Started playing again last year and don't understand why I quit in '07. Having more fun now than ever!
Whoops. Guess I forgot to put my membership in my sig. I'll fix that. I'm #69, BTW.

I have'nt been on TB much in the last few months as I was spending most of my free time building my own Telecaster guitar but in answer to your poll, I started playing bass when I was 16. Played my first gig at 16 and have loved playing Bass and Guitar ever since. And by the way WELCOME to all the new members lately.Love to see all us old farts still around and playing.

Glad to hear from you wolf! This thread kind of laid dormant for awhile, and then it came alive big time, but every since we got our first pretty lady Nancy on board, it's been lying dormant!! I figured once Nancy came on, everybody and their brother would start signing up!

Any way I started playing guitar at 14 what's that 7-8 grade and then in high school switched to bass Cause ? you got it.. There were none to be found and a band can't gig without a bass player.. so I Switch in 1966 first year of high school.. We sure did raise hell on all the jocks
Any way most of my life has been playing professionally and filling in with day gigs when my wife said Hey Buddy you just got to grow up and get a day gig like the rest of the world. So off I went. Any way I continued playing till I hit my early 30's and wanted to quite smoking so for me that meant getting away from the smoke and that resulted in no gigs for a few years and hard labor on the UPS preload.. Anyway I got back to it in the late 80's and had a good run till I turned 48 and said what the hell are you doing, these chicks aren't interested in you do I get a number?

do I get a number? I should probably clarify somethings. I have never cheated on my wife and although I was born of irresponsible parents I did not follow in their footsteps. My wife and I chose to not have children and believe me society is not easy on that one. My wife and I were separated when I turned forty two and she died of cancer five years later. This post is not about pity. I was raised in the school of hard knocks and feel that I did fairly well considering.. I did die of a heart attack at 58 and was revived.. So maybe I have got more tunes to play rock on world! its a good thing....
