Looking at a BC Rich Bich NJ series bass in Olympic white...seriel number R184416. IIRC these where the ones still made in Japan. I had a bich guitar when I was younger and have found memories of it...or of the times with it to be more specific. Are these any good? How thick is the neck at the nut? Looks to be about Fender P sized.

Got a BC Rich NJ series this week and I must say she is a total monster. I love the neck through body and pre-amp its like a having 4 differant basses with all the sounds you can get.

Am new to Talk Bass & have made provisions fer a bongo4 in the near future.

But in an attempt to placate that inner metal child, me has been wanting a BC Rich 4-string fer some time.

Stumbled on this in one of the very few vintage dealers blogsites in Malaysia. Asking fer slightly over USD$800. He says he thinks its 1986 & Japanese made. Serial number B 6497.

Would greatly appreciate any advice on what to look out for if/when I do go check out this instrument.

Would need a rear shot of the headstock, but it looks Korean to me, also, a close up shot of the neck, it looks to me like it's been scalloped, sure looks like you can see the side marker dots on the face of the fretboard, in which case, I personally wouldn't even bother going to look at it

And how would you explain the loss of the 2 dots at the 12th fret then?

Simple, the idiot that scalloped it sanded away too much at the 12th fret and not as much everywhere else.

I have never seen a BCR import neck without the 12th fret inlays, (that hadn't been Scalloped), please feel free to show me more examples of non inlayed 12th fret necks

Woa! I said I have seen necks like that before, I didn't say I have seen BCR import necks like that before. And actually, I didn't even say this particular neck wasn't scalloped.

I just thought it was fairly obvious that some customizing had been done on the neck -- and if that is the case, then wrap-around fret markers on the side edge of the fingerboard was a possibility, as well as not having 12th fret dots. I say this as one who likes wrap-around fret markers.

Although, I do think it is weird for there to not be 12th fret dots, whether it's because of hatchet job over-scalloping or having professional custom work done.

That is an NJ series II bass with a Super 100 neck, made from over 100 pieces of wood, the fretboard was manmade, I.E. not real wood, so scalloping it would have weakened the neck terribly

NOT Japanese made, they appeared around 1989/1990
