Whew.....great hockey in Toronto and Buffalo tonight. Sure, the Pens lost 1-0, but I enjoyed the game enough to not be too disappointed in the result. Reimer was on fire all night, so was Brent Johnson. Malkin gave it his all on every shift, but the stat sheet doesn't show it. Hey, the Leafs needed this one after last night and they earned it.

Ryan Miller and Henrik Lundqvist put on a great show in Buffalo too. I had a hard time staying with one game to watch.

Ug... Caps continue to not play like a playoff-caliber team. Of course it hurts that they didn't have their top three players. Ovi's back for the next game, but somewhat surprisingly, Backstrom's still out from that elbow from Bourque... I was hoping he would be fully recuperated after the All-Star break.

I'll continue my vigil in front of NHL.com, waiting and hoping to hear about Rene Bourque getting run over by a bus...

I watched that game last night, and as a Kings' fan, it was an amazing finish. :hyper:

Looking at the replay today, I can see how this should raise some questions about control and accuracy of the clock. It hasn't been indicated (and we'll probably never know) if it was a clock malfunction, or human error. This was the official game clock, and accurate or not, it is still the basis for time keeping. Did the delay at 1.8 seconds allow the goal to happen before the buzzer? Undoubtedly. Were there other inaccuracies in the starting and stopping of the clock at each whistle and puck-drop throughout the game? Again, undoubtedly. Unless the delay is somehow proven to be an intentional act by the clock operator, I think this game has to stand as is. I would agree, however, that the issue of clock control and accuracy needs to be investigated further.

There's no issue there; the game will stand no matter what they find to be the cause of the pause in game time. The Kings' GM released some crazy statement about how clocks are always 'recalibrating' themselves; he seemed to be alluding that this pause was a built-in artifact of clocks that helps them maintain correct time. Sounds like a load of crap, but the bottom line is that the game result will stand. I just hope they figure out what happened to prevent it from happening again.

Maybe a load of crap. Maybe not. As the game was winding down in the last minute, I saw the broadcast clock (the one shown in the block with the score, etc.) stutter at about 10 sec to go. You would think the official game clock would be pretty stable, but something wonky definitely happened in this case.

I didn't see the game, but any official game clock freezing, stuttering, or pausing in any way is definitely a major anomaly. If I interpreted the Kings' GM's comments correctly, it sounds like he believes this is normal clock self-correcting behavior, which is definitely erroneous. That said, I have no idea what happened, but the Kings are going to keep their two points, no doubt. The rest of the West is just going to have to move on.

Wings get a nice win in Vancover last night (or this mourning). They are now the first NHL team to 70 points, and they have won their sixth shootout in a row. What I like about this team is they are winning a lot of 3-2, 2-1, and 4-3 games. That's a good sign for the second season.

I was counting on your boys to win that one.

Performance of the year so far has to go to Cam Ward for his 47 saves in Boston Thursday night on the way to a shutout. He was amazing. I didn't care who won at first, but as it went on, I was totally cheering on Ward. Even Chara teed him up a few times.

The Pens and Bruins both go into the Saturday game after shutout losses with their backup goalies playing. Hurry up and get here 1PM EST Saturday.

Wow. That's pretty bad. I guess the coach thought it was an accident, because he hardly reacted at all. But it looked intentional to me. If so, he should be kicked out of the league.

Nine out of ten for the Pens. Malkin is playing lights out, and with no disrespect to his buddy Datsyuk, the best hockey in the NHL right now. The Pens are slowly creeping up on Philly and the Rangers.

What's up with Boston? Is that 4-5-1 in the last 10? They ran into a couple hot goalies the last two games in Fleury and Ward, which is understandable I suppose. But the human wall of fortitude is looking surprisingly human now. The guys I work with are calling for Rask.

Back I go to the STL/NSH game, which is another good one so far.

Yikes....anyone see Kovalchuk put a beatdown on Brayden Schenn tonight? Bush league move from Rinaldo on the Flyers, twice in the game. Too bad Schenn had to get beat up because of Rinaldo. I did sort of laugh when I saw the Devils up 6-0 on the Flyers. The Pens have been beat like that, and those games are no fun to watch.

Rask has been playing better than Thomas for the last 2-3 weeks, but goaltending is not the B's problem. The prime problems are:

1. Turning the puck over in their own zone/unable to clear their zone;
2. Getting out-hustled and out-worked for 50/50 pucks in the corners and in the neutral zone; and
3. Abysmal passing. When they went on that run in November and the first three weeks of December, 90% of their passes were tape to tape; just unbelievably crisp. Now, 70% of their passes are in the skates or ahead/behind, putting the man out of stride and causing off-sides, broken plays, or turnovers.
4. Not finishing their checks well. I'm not sure if the suspensions to Marchand and Ference are in the back of their minds, but they just aren't hitting.

I'm as disgusted with a top-tier team as I can be right now. My dog looked like he wanted to run away from home today when I was screaming at the TV. ;)
