The first round of the NHL playoffs for 2016 has started and it's the first time ever that there is no Canadian team partucipating.

Of course, 3/4 of the players in the league are Canadian so . . . .


I'm a Blackhawks fan from way back but this year I find myself rooting for the St Louis Blues.

They've been so good for the past five years and they play with strentgh, skill and heart.

They've also never won the Stanley Cup. Judging by how they're leading the Hawks 3-1 in the opening series I think they're playing like they deserve it.

It's absolutely true that great goaltending is necessary to win the Stanley Cup and goalie Johnathon Quick has been just brilliant between the pipes.


Edit: I've been informed this is not the 1st time there are no Canadian teams in the playoffs. Oooops.

Malkin has a big game to help put the Pens up 3-1 in the series.
Matt Murray (31 saves in the shutout) wins another game in goal for the Pens. First it was Zatkoff, now Murray. Fleury will be able to take his time coming back, which is a nice luxury this time of year.

Wow, the Pens put away the Rangers with authority. I didn't expect that, and especially how they won tonight.
The new guys, all young, made big plays.
Murray is continuing to impress in goal, 38 saves tonight.

Crazy how St. Louis has fallen apart.

Dallas Stars just beat the Minnesota Wild.

What a bizarre game!

Score was 4 to 0, Stars, in the 2nd. The Wild scored 3 in a row to get the home crowd back into it.

Suddenly, the puck was in the Minnesota crease and the goalie and defenseman somehow managed to both kick the puck into their own net. 5 - 3.

Then the Wild spent the 2nd half of the 3rd period pounding Dallas mercilessly. 5 - 4.

In the final minute they managed to get the puck 98% over the goal line. One, tiny fraction of an inch short of the tying goal.

Dallas moves on to round 2.

St Louis v. Chicago is the game to watch.

St Louis has home advantage and they're desperate to prove they can win in the playoffs, having never won a cup. On paper, they're the superior team.

Chicago has demonstrated the uncanny ability to come back from deep holes, snatching victory from the jaws of defeat time after time.

Goaltending is key in the playoffs and both Elliot and Crawford have been superb.

I think it's a coin toss who's going to come out ahead on this one.

The Pens continue to win with guys off the bench. Matt Murray with 47, yes forty seven, saves to help lead the Pens to a 2-1 series advantage.
Much respect to Orpik for how he handled his three game suspension. He's a classy player, so we all know he didn't target Maatta.
Huge bummer though to have Maatta out.

Yeah, but now we lose Tanger. Taking bets on 1 or 2 games. My money is on one.

Edit: Looks like 1 game suspension.
