I'm just wondering why everyone says this is a chunky neck? I own a ATK 300 and the neck width reminds me of a P-bass but I find it less thick from fretboard to back of neck than a P-bass.

What do you all think?

I think for comments on the neck being chunky arises because they compare it to other Ibanez basses, w/c of course are slimmer and thinner than an ATK's. But yeah mines not chunky, comparable to a P or a MM neck.

All three of mine feel completely different. My 300 reminds me of a P, my 750 almost feels like a jazz(just wider at the nut), and my 700 is the chunkiest...but it's still not too chunky.

I can easily tell one from the other blindfolded and using only my left hand to grab the neck anywhere between the first and fifth frets.

For some reason, all three were spec'd the same on Ibanez's website.

Mine is pretty thick front to back.

All 3 of mine have a different feel as well with my tri fade being comfortably chunkier than the rest.
I would describe my 750 the same as yours

The other night in practice I switched back to the StingRay type sound on the bridge p'up (1st and third coils in gear), and what I got was turbo-farting: no bass end of things but just a treble, mid-range, fart sound as if there was too much gain and the mid-range EQ cranked all the way. ?

Weird because:
1) I use TC's BH500 head with 3 memory settings I use for: a Ric 4001 BlackBeauty growling, a JTB401 P with thumpin' flats and the third spot for the ATK750KA which is quite neutral so I can further adjust for the song with the ATK's EQ.
2) Amp was untouched since the last practice and the ATK's midrange was not cranked. Rechecked everything to be sure and still, that p'up selection (I call it the StingRay mode) was terrible turbo fart.

Anyone else experience this?

not me. have you tried it through another amp yet? was the amp unplugged since last practice? i wonder if a power-surge could have popped it.

Heya THand.
It was fine through my little B20 at home.
There was no problem with the P through the amp, or the ATK at either of the other p'up selections.

Probably just something stupid I had set at the time. But it was still surprising.

Hopefully it won't happen again. I would take a look at the solder joints and wires and be sure everything looks ok, just for piece of mind.

So I'm considering modding my red sparkle ATK300 by adding a Lace sensor split coil precision pick up. I've seen a couple other pickup adding ATK mods but nothing with a P pickup. It's always a J or that one time someone added a Ric-O-Sound set up. Thus far my two questions are would it be fairly easy to just wire in the P as passive with a stacked tone/volume and separate blend knob? Also does anyone know where to get a split coil / P pickup ring? Like Yamaha puts on their BB's?

I think I've seen the rings at basspartsresource.

No body has tried the P pup because the P's coil that is closest to the bridge is in the same spot as the ATK's coil that is closest to the neck. It was deemed a cool idea, that when examined closer, probably would not add enough to the sound of the bass to be worth the trouble.

But yeah, since the ATK pup is passive, you should be able to wire it in in a host of ways, including the way you mention.

It's kind of silly project because I love the bass as is but it just so happens that I have a brand new Lace sensor P sitting around without a home. I had been considering buying cheaper P to drop it in but thought that it could be cool in the ATK. I think it will probably have to be mounted slightly higher than the standard P position but overall should work well and I think it will look cool if I can get a chrome pickup ring as described above.

Since it will indeed need to be moved closer to the neck than the standard P position, you might want to consider moving it even closer to the neck, so that the entire P pickup fits within the bounds of the pickguard. That way, you don't need a mounting ring at all.

That's what I did when I added a second OEM ATK pickup to my 305. Having another pickup in the "woofer position" has turned out to be more useful than I would have imagined, and I highly recommend it.

Can I join?
I've had my ATK305 for a few years now.
I love it even though it is a little heavy.

Has anybody thought of cuting off a peice of their one peice maple neck (the fretboard) and getting some rosewood glued in it's place? I love my ATK but, I'd love it too have a rosewood fretboard even more. Do you guys think it can be done?

P.S. Oh yeah almost forgot I know that you need to post a pic. No pic no bass. However I don't really know how to post pics. Which is pretty sad considering I'm 21.
