They were (and are).
The active electronics are cheap and sloppy, as they are in every Cor-Tek of any nominal "brand" I think I've ever seen (and I've seen a lot). Electronics are the weak link in Cor-Tek stuff, as in most non-Japanese Asian builds. I think it's sort of "out of sight, out of mind" thinking, and it's unfortunate to find in otherwise nice instruments.

This is why I'm not a fan of active electronics in general.
I'm not trashing them, and as I've mentioned there are things I like very much about them -- I just think they're imperfect, like every other bass, and their imperfections are as legitimate a subject for discussions as what they got right.
That's how gear develops and improves.
In the meantime, while we're waiting, it's how our understanding of gear increases along with improving our judgment of what's best for us.
You're describing a fanboy circle-jerk, not meaningful discussion.
But above all, son, understand that I don't need your permission for anything.

I didn't find my stock preamp plated in gold and remnants of fairy dust when I opened up the control plate to take a look...nor did I expect to.
I have found that it has been quite a usable and reliable preamp, despite the shortcomings you've described.
I personally, don't have a problem with it....my opinion is based on actual live gigging situations and recording.
I don't hold your opinion in much high regard as nothing about it seems to be based on personal experience...
It is an opinion.....nothing more......
As I stated previously, despite all the pompous ranting in your profile about how much meaningless "stuff" you own....nothing even hints at musicianship or a background in electronics....

I would like to point out, that his complaining is irrelevant since the 750, 700, and the 300 have been discontinued. If you have a good one (and odds are you do), you have a good one.
We know Ibanez made some big changes with the line in the 200 and the Presige such as body shape(will it affect weight?), bridge (easier/more available pup replacement options), a blend knob on the Prestige(much needed, IMO), and the pups themselves are entirely different. I would not doubt that the preamp is entirely different too(a passive option?)
These changes are big enough to be comparable to when Fender introduced the modern P configuration in 1957. Will it be well received? Is it a huge mistake? I guess we have to wait and see, but it can't be said that Ibanez isn't trying to keep the ATK line alive and relevant. So cudos for that.
It will probably be a while before I get any personal experience with the new setup. I was about to buy a slightly overpriced yet mint USATK this week, but last minute I went with a Highway One Jazz. The main reason is simple, I already have 3 ATKs, and zero true jazz basses, though I do have a few P's. Other than just having a USATK to have it, I couldn't imagine a role for it that isn't already covered. As FunkFactor has said, that 750 can cover almost everything. Except passive
So it is still likely going to be looking at a Glockenklang preamp in the near future to get the passive option (and to see why FunkFactor loves it so much)!

Just got this a few weeks ago. Japan-made ATK500 from '96, flame Koa over Alder. Don't see many of these around. I'm impressed with it so far and my band-mates like it too. All it needed was a new output jack and I fixed a loose battery clip with velcro. The neck is perfect and super-stable. The ATK is a bass I've always wanted since it came out, but never got around to getting one until now. The local stores don't keep them in stock. Number please!

They're SIT Silencers, which are semi-flatwound. They sound excellent! Brighter than flats but less zingy than rounds, with a smooth feel.
I've got an ATK-700 in the Blue Moon finish, and I really dig it. Probably one of the best basses in it's price range - I only paid $300 for it. My only complaint would be the cheap preamp Ibanez used for these - its prone to microphonic feedback when standing close to a loud amp, and you can hear some hiss from the EQ when boosting levels. On the plus side, its bullet proof, sits in the mix well, has a great feeling neck, and it is a great redneck bar bass.
wow, you think a blue quilted maple bass is a great redneck bar bass? you must have some money then, because that looks way to pretty to sit in a bar peacefully.
I am already a member of the club but I thought it would be nice to post a family shot of my three ATKs. The 300 and 305 both have Webstring flatwounds on it that sound amazing. I love the tone I get from both of them. I generally play in traditional or attack, depending on what band I am playing in, and find with flats and a little bass and mid boost I get this perfect tone for Motown type music. It fits perfectly in the mix for the Hairspray show I am currently playing in. They are very versatile. I play the four and five in a rock band and in attack mode they cut through great and I have gotten many compliments on the tone. I also have an ATK 100. I really like the tone I get from this one, though I do not use it much at all. The 300 and 100 were built in 95 in the Cort factories and the 305 is one of the ones from the recent blow out I was lucky enough to get my hands on. Well enough talking, here are the pictures.
I gigged with the ATK for the first time this past Saturday night, and I have to say, it sounded absolutely killer. My main gigging bass for the past few years has been my G&L L2000, but the ATK just killed it the other night. I think I found my new regular gigging bass.
