i've enjoyed DR lo-riders for funky stuff. Lately i have been using the heavy gauge d'addario's, they settle into a nice bassy tone for rounds. heavy gauge and high tension is how i like it. both those types string through the body just fine. EB strings, IME, last two weeks at best, so if you have acidic hands i would suggest DRs of some kind, they last WAY longer. even uncoated.

Iv'e heard good things about cleartones from what I remember, but I have no experience with coated strings at all.

If you've got a new ATK the new sting ferrules might give you the extra .0000001 of a mm that you need to for them to string properly, to be honest the only reason these strings don't reach is cos I have a pretty high action.

Thanks for the continuing advice guys. I appreciate it. One final question on the matter: of all the brands suggested, which one's do you guys think would be best for hard rock/southern rock/metal in the style of C.O.C./Down/Crowbar? I've gotta say that since I got my ATK I find myself wanting about 3 more.

+1 on heavy gauge D'Addarios - LOVE the XL set (nickel) in .50 - .135 on my ATK305 - best B string I have used. That being said, the regular "Long Scale" set is NOT long enough for through-body on the E - starts tapering just before the nut. Doesn't bother me as I always string through bridge.

These strings are tight - same gauges by Fender and even D'Addario ProSteels (stainless steels) are less tension on the same bass.

They sound great new, but once the high end mellows lsightly in a couple weeks, they last a LONG time and sound fanatasic on the ATK IMO.

That stringing thing is a real pain in the balls isn't it, I'd probably be pretty set on those D' Aquistos otherwise, it's just that extra couple of mm that would make the difference, bit annoyed that the D' Addarios aren't gonna fit either, and I'm not sure if rotos are gonna reach either.

In your case zombie I'd probably go with the Dunlops, real hard arse rock strings, just a tad too bright for me otherwise I'd love em, I really don't see why they say they're so versatile on their page cos I can't see them doing anything other then heavy tones well. To be honest when I get my ATK back with the Jazz pickup the slight OTT brightness (for my taste) might not be an issue cos of the extra depth and low mid growl.

I use D'adario XL160 and they are sting through and are just long enough...:confused:

First post here.

Does anyone know if I can get or order an ATK with an ebony or rosewood fingerboard?

I've been looking for a new bass, I play an Ibanez RB690 roadster II. I keep trying other basses in the store and most of the necks at the nut are very narrow. The soundgear series are definitely not for me.

I tried an ATK and I liked the neck as it feels closest to the neck on my 690. But I also prefer an ebony or rosewood fingerboard over the maple.

I'd like to order one with a black body with the neck pickup, ebony or rosewood fingerboard and the antique chrome hardware, or black if they have it.


Sort of like the Paul Grey model but I don't play signature guitars.

I have recently become a lover of all things Ibanez. I got a smokin' deal on one of those all black guitar center ATK's and it's been down hill since then. An Ibanez A/E a week later and my new Soundgear should be here Friday. As far as strings go, I string mine up BEAD through the body and use Stainless Steel DR Low Riders. No problems at all. I'm on the Hunt for another ATK but I have to sell my Squier DAJV and my Washburn Hammerhead first.

Hey guys sorry Ive been busy with school and such. I know it sounds lazy but it takes a little time to go through the thread and get numbers. Ill get on it right now, haha.

And as for the question about the preamp, in one of my ATKs, the preamp was changed to a Semour Duncan (I think the one for the musicman) and it has a push-pull volume knob that enhances some lows and mids when pulled up. It sounds good for certain things, but my soundguy actually prefers the stock one in my other old ATK

Yeah, they're fine, for your use mebbe go with stainless, although as I said before the nickels are pretty bright of nickles.

Might just be using a lower action, mines a good 5mm at the 12th overall (at least) and it's only the first taper of the E in all these sets that aren't long enough, not quite over the nut by only a mm or 2.

It's not that much of a signature, it's just a looks thing and it having an ebony fingerboard, other then that it's probably standard, although it's likely to come with thicker strings in a BEAD tuning.

Not sure if any older models have had rosewood/ebony fingerboards, but if there are you might be able to find the model number and look on the Ibanez spares site and see if you can get a replacement neck, may be a little pricey. Unless you can find an older model 2nd hand that has one, I know that limited edition GC model had a rosewood/ebony board, think the electrics might have been a little different though.
