Official Barefaced Bass Cab Club

After a quick mail to Alex to confirm it would be a good choice for me, I just paid the deposit on a Super Twin to replace my SVT-410HLF-with-the-tweeter-turned-off.

I just had to share 'cause I'm excited :hyper:
Your back AND your ears are going to be SO happy!!

It will take whatever amount of power you throw at it and ask "is that all ya got?"

A question or 3 for other Big Twin 2 users ...

I use an Ashdown ABM 500 to drive mine & my main weapons of choice are a Fender Jazz, Gibson Tbird, Mike Lull JT4. Playing wise I mainly play with a pick.

My questions are:-
what Amps do you guys & girls use?

Have you ever used an Ashdown amp to drive your Barefaced?
If you have, have you felt the need to change from an Ashdown?
(No bad on Ashdown, I just feel like a change cos I've been using ABMs since 2002)

& have you a preference of on one branded amp over any other ?

Adios

BF cabs are pretty neutral so if you like your bass and amp, you should be Gold.

I love my GK MBF800 and Jazz Bass so they just sound better through my SuperTwin!

One odd thing happened to me though, I was using flatwound strings almost exclusively until I got the ST. Somehow I like the rounds more with this cab, not sure why. Maybe because there's no tweeter? I never used the tweeter in any cabs before...

In about 4 weeks will be using my Abm500 with a supertwin (which i think is similar-ish but minus the tweeter). Can't wait!

Most likely. You could start with a One10 and order a second one later, depending on how critical it is to be loud in the immediate future.
Monsterthompson, what do you think - does one Two10 will sound the same as two One10? I saw this demo on youtube and loved the tone of this Two10, just wonder if it sounds similar to two 10th?

Just speculation, but I've heard that the positioning of the port(s) has some impact on the tone, so I would think that would apply to the 2x One10 compared to the Two10.
Drastic difference? I doubt it.

I wouldn't say they are 100% identical, but they are certainly very very very close. I noticed the 110 tone changed more by aiming the port to the side vs. down than the 210, but it's not a huge difference at all. I didn't run them side by side, but my memory says the tone of the 210 and 110 are as close as you could get. Obviously you get some coupling and you have a bigger box with the 210. You'd need to have a great ear to tell the difference.

This is good news because I also watched this demo of one10 and did not like the tone, kinda compressed compared to previous demo

Honestly, I don't think watching any kind of youtube demo give you an idea about any cabinet's sound; too many variables between the cabinet and you-- mics bass, amps, players, mixing of demo, etc. In no way does that demo there sound anything like my One10.

My phone won't play the first one you linked to, but that second one sounds thinner than I'd like. I wouldn't buy the 110 based on that second demo, but there's a bunch more at play. I will say the 110 does "compress" a bit more than the 210 at lower volumes. I'm not sure what the technical reason for this is, but I'd guess the internal volume plays a role. I found myself adding a compressor with the 210. Of course I was running an 800w amp at 4ohms through the 210 vs a 400w through 8 ohms with the 110 and trying to achieve solo practice volumes. Adding a comp pedal with the 210 got it to behave more like what I wanted at the lower volumes. This may be more a function of my amp than the cab.

Alright, it's time to praise the other speaker in my BB2: the tweeter.
I have both the BB2 and the SM, both with their 12" behemoth driver. And usually I carry around the SM due to its size and weight. It's tweeter is good, not too scratchy and doesn't take away from the sound rather adds in highs and zing.

But today I was practicing with the BB2 and I was overly impressed with the G string (who isn't?). Had the highs dialed all the way up on the cab and WOW! The tone was clean with no audible break as I played the spectrum. The notes were punchy and fat - even though they were up the neck. Leaving some open strings resonating (Lenny by SRV / Tommy Shannon) lets the bass sing.

I'm a 4-stringer, but if I went 5, is consider leaving the low B alone and really working the high C.

In short, the BB2 will absolutely shake your (and my house) with its bass, but let us not overlook the ability to play up high and cut through with a bit of fast melody every now and then. The BB2, even more so than the SM, clears the air and will let you be heard.

Well, holy moly. The introductory price is pretty amazing. It'll go up very soon, like within days, like the One10 did. That price-- 659 British pounds -- is about $947 US-- only about $100 more than a Two10. Tempting. I'd said I wouldn't buy any more gear for a while... I should pass. I will pass. Or, I dunno what I'll do.

Good question, since most of us will never need anything more (i.e., an additional cabinet) than a Barefaced 4x10. That's the equivalent of a lot of 6x10's or 8x10's on the market.

It's so efficient that there's no need to chase maximum watts from your amp. We could put a 4 ohm badge on the back and leave it as an 8 ohm cab and no-one would be any the wiser! ;)

I found these comparisons interesting, since I used SWR Goliath 4x10's for a LONG time, and started back in about '87 or so, when a 4x10 was an odd duck. From the Barefaced site:

How does this compare tonally to classic 4x10"s?

Compared to a Trace 1048 it's fatter and warmer sounding with less honk. Compared to an SWR Goliath it's tighter but deeper in the lows with more midrange weight. Compared to an Ampeg 410HE it's bigger in the lows and more transparent through the mids. Compared to an Ampeg 410HLF it's tighter in the lows and stronger in the mids. Compared to these cabs with their tweeters turned right down the Four10 has more treble clarity around the room, whilst with the horns all the way up the Four10 sounds more mellow but more consistent, without that sonic gap betwen woofer and tweeter in the low treble region.
