Official Barefaced Bass Cab Club

I was asked to turn it down to give the PA a chance. I'm not kidding either! I am no great judge of volume these days as I daren't damage my hearing any further. As so many other users have said, it feels wrong for so much bass energy to be coming out of such small boxes. One box is still on idle when rehearsing with a 15-piece big band. Two are insurance for gigs and larger rooms. I'm not sure if they would cope with a marquee - I have Super Compact for that.

Did a country/blues gig with the Super Bassman 300 and Four10 (and Nordy VP5). Outdoor art fair, elevated stage with nothing behind it in a large Courtyard, no PA support except vocals. Sounded great, fat and defined, no problem with volume or low end. I was standing about a foot in front of the cab, and I could hear every note clearly.

Guys Im thinking about ordering a big twin to run with either my tonehammer 500 or Mesa subway 800. Currently I am using a Bergantino HD 410. I guess what Im wondering is besides the weight being that the Barefaced will be lighter, do you think I would gain anything in the terms of clarity and secondarily volume over the Berg that I am using now? I guess I could always try it and keep the one I like better. If anyone has experience with both cabs Ive metioned, I would love to hear your thoughts. Thx guys!

Good to know. How would you rate the degree of tube-y deliciousness?

Hmmm. Bear in mind that I tend to play almost 100% clean sound, so my idea of "tubey" might be different from yours. It had the tube heft and attack for sure. If your idea of "tubey" includes that familiar Ampeg lomid-hump, himid-scoop, hi-boost, then it's not as tubey as the SVT212AV or SVT810. But it was plenty tubey sounding for me, even on the overdrive channel.

By the way, I was able to pretty much nail the "Forget Me Nots" tone using the SB300 clean channel, bass all the way down, mid and treble all the way up. Pretty cool, even though I had no use for that sound this gig. :)

I'm pretty sure you'll gain volume...quite a bit, especially if you have plenty of power to feed the Big Twin. The tone will be quite different than the Berg...clarity? Definitely better in the lows, at least.

I think my Four 10 must have opened up considerably in the few weeks I have had it, with a gig and a couple of band practices. When I first got it I thought it was a bit of a "leveller" between my tube heads, as it imparted its own character on the sound and made the differences between the heads less apparent. I have really enjoyed the Trace Elliott V4 and the Orange AD200 with it, so tonight I went out to decide which head I would use this weekend - it was to be a toss up between the Super Bassman 300 and the V4B. I had a brief play with both and was really surprised by how clearly the Four 10 revealed the difference between the two heads. Tried the Orange and again clear differences were apparent. This is quite different to my impression when I played the heads (albeit briefly) through the cab when it first arrived so I can only assume it took a bit of playing to open up. All this is, of course, good. FWIW I will be taking the Super Bassman tomorrow. It was really tight, controlled and punchy with plenty of authority. The Orange AD200 was much darker in comparison. The strong midrange character of the Ampeg V4b was immediately apparent, although it could be eq'd out. I really was surprised by how strongly the Four 10 responds to the different heads, in a very positive way. I can't really pick a favourite combination yet, but I think the Ampeg will probably get least use with the Barefaced and will stay on top of its Ampeg 212av cab.
Not sure precisely how the cab has changed, I suspect the bottom end could be more extended albeit still very controlled and maybe (I hesitate to say this as it can be misinterpreted) a bit looser and more tubey but in a very positive way. I also think it may respond more to eq changes now, but that could be just me becoming more familiar with it. It certainly does not lack volume, I pushed the Super Bassman a bit and the cab seemed very comfortable. I wish I still had my old Ampeg 810 for a direct comparison as it did not seem any less dominant than I recall the Ampeg in the band room. Suppose I should have compared it to the Fender 810.

Nice write up there Tim1. I love how my V4B sounded thru my Gen 2, Big Twin-T, just HUGE. But it's such an easy schlep to take the Peavey MM1000 and the BF cab. And that combination sounds even HUGE-ER. I've tried a couple other of my amps, Ashdown, GK MB800, BBE BMax-pre/Crown XLS1500 thru the Big Twin-T. Gotta say, my fave tone so far is with the MM1000.

I plan to dig out my hardly ever used Carvin B1500 to try thru the BF cab to a big biker bar gig soon; mostly just for kicks. The B-Bomber (B1500) head in it's 3 space Rollin Rack case weighs abit more than half of my Big Twin cab. :***: Aint nobody got time for that...:rollno:
