Official Barefaced Bass Cab Club

I could be wrong, but I think you can order an updated steel grill for an existing cab, to match a newer cab
Question for the club, I'm looking to change up my cabs a bit and maybe need a reality check. Currently have a Two10 (with the old steel grill) and I'm thinking about adding a One10 to get a bit more height and volume occasionally. Not sure if this is a good approach or not and the mismatching grill might niggle.
The far less sensible option is to blow it all up and start over with a Three10 and One10 matching pair for.... well lots of $$
Which would you choose?

I don't think I'd mix the Three10 and One10 because their drivers have different impedance which wouldn't make for optimum power distribution (the One10 would receive too much power).

Check the Three10 description: But we could totally make a One10 with a 10CRA driver (12 ohm nominal impedance) that you could stack on this Three10 and have a rig that can still be considered a 4 ohm nominal load (trust us on this - impedance is an odd and complex thing and the glorious thing about 10CR or 10CRA drivers in Hybrid Resonator enclosures is that they have much smaller swings in impedance magnitude and phase than most drivers in most cabs). If you're really persuasive we could make a wider version of the One10 (sideways) so it looks really good on top of a Three10 - cloth grill only though, we don't want to order a load of steel grills for what we think would be a rather niche product... Three10 / Three10T

I would leave the Three10 at the jam space and move the One10 around so adding a One10 to the Three10 makes a bit of sense for my specific use.

Assuming the matching grill doesn't work out (which would be the simplest and cheapest solution) and assuming you have the money to do so in a responsible manner, I think you've answered your own question with this statement :)

I wouldn't choose either of those options. First of all, because I'm a 12" kinda guy. But in your situation, what I would do is dispense with all the second guessing and just get another Two10 cab. It will suit your requirements for additional volume when you need it, you don't have to worry about any impedance mismatching, you can get the grill to match your first cabinet, and most importantly, it's the most economical means to get to where you want to go.

I've had the 12s, 3 of them and I just don't like the sound. Tens are where it's at for me.

One10 works for me at home as I have limited space in my music cubby. 2 x Two10s would be absolute bottom of my preference for transportation so thats a big pass haha.

I didn't read that. A matching One10 would be cool. And that would be quite a rig.

hmm now you have me rethinking this too. That's not a baaaad idea at all either.

This...^

You will also gain more height with a second 2x10 and won't have to push the rig as hard in louder volume situations. I don't remember the height of the 3x10 cabinets but IMO a vertical stack works better for getting a speaker closer to ear level. The 3x10 seems like it was designed as a one cabinet solution to move more air and provide more volume.

^ I couldn't get through more than five minutes of his annoying voice. I believe the speaker and cabinet is
most important. This is why we use Barefaced cabs. The sound and volume are incredible. The amp
is important but not as much as the cabinet IMO. Same for stereo systems.

I get the difficulty with his presentation style. He essentially had two amps and two sets of speakers (green backs and cream backs), and he mixed and matched with a reamp box. Switching heads was difficult to notice through the same cab/speaker, but switching speakers with the same head was more noticeable. He backed it up with some comparison graphs/plots so you could see the dB differences in various frequencies. He also showed the similar graphs based on mic position. Overall, his point is that the cab and mic (and mic position) has a greater impact than the amp and he provides his evidence.

I agree the cab is important (that's why I'm here), but he could have proven the opposite if he wanted to.

I'm always suspicious when someone explains that everybody except him is stupid, especially with simplified explanations. It would be more honest to say someting like "contrary to popular belief, the cab counts as much as the amp".

But if he helped a few guitarists realise the importance of cabs, why not.

LOL. If cab were not important Barefaced wouldn't exist and we wouldn't be here. But if amps were not important, Alex would not spend years truying to create his own :roflmao:

A thing he excluded from his presentation and analysis was the range of the EQ and built in gain and distortion for each amp. Amps have knobs for making adjustments.

I think the cab is critical because that speaker is the final filter between the amp and your ears, and it has no tuning… unless you count tweeter controls and the possibility of plugging ports, which generally isn't something you see on guitar cabs...

Ultimately, if you've got a speaker that's fighting your goal and your amp doesn't have the EQ power to overcome that, then the system won't provide you the results you want.

Testing has begun!
Super Twin versus Three10
Initial thoughts: for my tonal goals, they're both excellent options, just need to somehow choose a winner..
If I had more space, I'd probably keep them both. It's difficult to capture the black & tan grill cloth in photos, almost looks grey. These pics taken on my aging phone simply don't do them justice.

Listen at a distance, and listen in a mix with drums and voice. Give a go stuffing/sealing the Three10's port to see the difference that makes. :)
