I have had both fretted and fretless models and with the lr baggs/tapewound combination fretless is what it sound best at. In my opinion of course.
I would suggest trading for another ac 40 that is done already. Or selling and buying or if you can afford to keep them both.
I have defretted basses twice and it does damage quite a bit.
