Great looking bass but I would be lost with those extra strings. How do you string a 6? Is it BEADGC?

I couldn't be happier with it so far. KayCee (aka Andy) has been my bass teacher for awhile so I was already familiar with it and had actually had the chance to play it before he decided to sell it. This past Monday I played it again and, even though I've primarily played a four string previously, was completely sold on it.

The fact that it has 19mm spacing was a plus for me, as opposed to Andy, because I'm used to the wider spacing of a four string. The neck is so smooth and the bass is so well balanced that it plays effortlessly. It looks really good in person too.

I have an LB75 and an Icon 5 with 17mm spacing and an XB75 with 19mm spacing. I notice a huge difference between the string spacing. Of course, the XB is also a longer scale, so that has an effect on my left hand as well. The 19mm spacing is not horrible, but I definitely prefer the 17mm spacing. While the XB is a great instrument, it will probably never be my "go to" bass for that reason.

That the reason I sold my Icon5 the 17.mm was to close. I really like basses from 17.5 to 18.mm. If the Sb5000 is 19.mm is don't feel like it to me. When I play a true 19.mm I get my fingers jam between the strings but that don't happen with the SB5000. I'm thinking it might be 18.5mm.

Hmm, I guess this string spacing biz is really a matter of personal taste. Bummer I can't just swing by a Carvin shop and compare models. I suspect that 17mm might feel a bit tight for me though I'm sure I could adjust in time. Heck, I'm a 4 string guy so any 5 is going to feel weird at first. Having read so much on all things Carvin, I'll likely go with an SB5000 or a B50. I hear the spacing at the nut is more in the Jazz vain while the spacing down by the top pickup gives you plenty of room to romp (and slap!).

Sign me up! I will post pix later...I own two Carvins, both LB75's, fretted and fretless. Fretted one, aka Sarah, is standard neck size and was bought new in 94...all Koa. My fretless, aka Rachel, is one with a slightly wider neck and bought used in 1999. I think it was made in 1997 or 98. That one is also Koa with a five piece maple/koa neck.
I love these basses. I own about 10 basses total and if I have to pick one off the wall for a gig it's always the fretted Carvin.
