Whoa, what is that finish? It almost looks golden. But is it black?

I have a practical question for StingRay players and this seems like a good audience to ask:

Has anyone ever had output level problems with any of your basses?

The reason I ask is I'm not getting the kind of total volume I was expecting from my current rig, based on comments from past users of exactly the same system, plus, a few months back I used another bassist's GK stack (700RBwhatever with a 1x15 and 4x10) at a gig where our band opened for theirs and I ended up cranking his amp all the way up (input gain & master) and it still wasn't really loud to me (or anyone else & as best as I can recollect, my bass' preamp battery was OK).

I play with a fairly light touch, but I wouldn't think that would be the reason for the lack of volume that I'm experiencing.

Oh yeah, my bass is a 1997 StingRay 5.

Nah, that's definitely black; it looks golden because of the lighting. It's the classic black gloss / maple neck combo - the same as the one I've got (only I've got a lefty)!

just as a question becasue i want a EBMM what is the preference neck wise, rosewood or Maple. i think maple looks better but i'm jsut wondering the preference. als oi've played both types and i think maple sounds and feels better

I think it depends on the finish. I don't think maple looks as good with a light body finish, but others may disagree.

When I first got this one, my E and A strings where quite boomy compared to the D and G strings and the volume of notes was not even across the board. All I did was adjust the pickup height to get all strings volume even. My pickup sits at a slope now with it closest to the G then down the D down to the A and the lowest at the E. Problem solved for me.

Yes...then I replaced my battery and everything was back to normal!!! But since you say that it was ok, I'm not sure. I'd try replacing it if I was you...just to make sure. It's a cheap solution.

Just added the last & possibly the best Music Man bass to my arsenal with a 20th anniversary stingray 5. Took me 20 years to do it. Have had many high end basses over the years but Music Man is the enduring choice for me.

I gotta agree with the 20th aniversary SR 5 choice there...I tried that exact one but with maple neck....Now before that I didnt even consider the dual H pick-up design cause every one I had tried just wasnt doing it for me...but then I tried one of these new 20th aniv. ones and woah!!! The action was perfect everything was in the pocket and tonal variety was amazing...I was really impressed with the neck PUP....And just the overall look of it. They really have upped their game even more with this stuff...They really have improved on the original SR 5 design that much more...amazing bass!!! I almost was debating switching the money I put down on that pre-paid white SR 5 that I ordered which will look great not taking anything away there...but swaping that over to that 20th aniversary model...very impressed.

YES YES YES YES!!! finally someone with quality pics of a standard white SR 5!!! I have one of these on order since february...Same thing as that but I'll be having a white pearloid pick guard on mine! I'm liking the look of the neck on yours though.

thanks :) but actually it's not exacly white - it was some kind of yellow(it still is under the pickguard) and it turned into creamish-white-yellow(the color isn't really even across the body, some places are more white than others) - the pictures don't show the real color but it's pretty close. (they also don't show all the scratches and dings - there are plenty of those).
it's a 1990 SR, they don't use this color anymore.. anyone knows what's the name of the color?

BTW white with pearloid PG looks great!! paul turner has one - it's beautiful.

It's white my friend, at least it started out white and
aged into a nice cream color over the years - it's a
natural thing - take a look under the neckplate, it may
appear more like the original color but has probably
mellowed too.

Here is my white '90 Ray . . with aged pearloid guard:

This seems like a good place to ask.

Are the only difference between a two Pickup Stingray and a two Pickup Sterling the pickups (Stingray's Alcino and Sterling's Ceremic) and the neck profile (I heard Stingray's like a P while Sterling feels like a J)
The rest is the same right? Both are set it series in the two Pickup versions, controls etc?

Thanks.

Nope... there's more differences. The body shape is slimmer and lighter as well, if I'm not mistaken. Control-wise, it goes much farther. The Sterling pickup is a three-coil pickup (one's a phantom coil), and features a coil arrangement selector switch above the knobs so you can combine the coils in different ways (series, parallel, etc.) for different tones.

There's also no metal control plate underneath the knobs on the Sterling. The Stingray is a more traditional instrument in terms of controls, and has a sound the Sterling can get close to, but not match.
