The Sterling pickup is a three-coil pickup (one's a phantom coil), and features a coil arrangement selector switch above the knobs so you can combine the coils in different ways (series, parallel, etc.) for different tones.

But this can't be used if there are two pickups right? Because the blade would then be used to choose pickups instead of coils.

Different basses, different electronics.

Stingray-----Both pups parallel.
Sterling------Both pups series.

The switches do the same on both basses.

correct, the 2 pickup sterlings and sr5s are always in series.

Well I don't 'despise' them, but I don't like the Sterling or the single pickup SR5 (same sterling electronics) either. Been there, don't care to own them again.
I'm just a Stingray (& Sabre) kinda guy...
