IMO ... the single pickup keeps it popping up from time to time.
I know every time I see it ... I tell myself ... One pickup isn't enough.

My $0.02 :)



... Looks like my Elrick isn't going anywhere anytime soon ... so I'm guessing, I'm gonna need a number. :)
I know, I know ... No Pic = No Bass = No Number ... so here it is. :cool:

Yeah, I got it yesterday and, while it had a very nice P bass vibe and the body and neck feel amazing, this baby needs a pair of pups. I'm thinking about getting it modded like [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] with a pair of Aeros. If my wife did the taxes correct then I should be getting back a healthy chunk of cash so that's where some of it will be going.

I'm pretty sure it's a killer P-bass, but with the addition of another pickup in Tom Kennedy style ... it will KILL!!

:recap: 1 pickup = Sweet ... 2 pickups, Tom Kennedy style = KILLER SMOKE.

My Elricks both have their pups in about the Tom Kennedy position- I dig it a lot.

With both pups on, the inherent slap tone isn't really in-you-face or anything. I really like the slap tone with the neck pickup soloed- it gets quite punchy like a P, but it's more clear like a J. My bass is also mahogany and is a neck-through, so I wouldn't expect a typical J-bass type of slap out of it. I can record a clip if you'd like, but it may not equate to how yours would sound due to the wood/string differences.

I almost pulled the trigger on this bass and I am local to where it came from (last) but that was my main concern. I thought with one pick up, it would be a "one trick pony" I have a bass now with a single Nordstrand and an Aggie OBP3. It sounds great but outside of coil taps, it just has 1 tone. Your Elrick is beautiful and that reason alone made me want it but I couldn't tie up the $$$. I'd love to hear it after you make your mods. I think Jazz in the neck and MM in the bridge would be killer!

Nah, don't worry about the sound clips. Your bass is light years different than mine is as far as woods are concerned. I can kind of get a decent slap tone out of it now with just the one pup so I'm sure it'll be fine when I get the other installed.

I'm really surprised with the tonal variety with the one pup configuration. It's all lies with the preamp. If I want a more Jaco-esque tone then I just cut my highs, boost my mids and leave the bass flat. It's not as Jaco-esque as my Peavey Cirrus 6'er, or the Valenti for that matter, but it's got some bark when I dig in. The added pup will totally give me a whole new dimension, however.

I'm really loving the neck and feel of this baby. It's light, REALLY light. This may be the final resting place of this one, especially if I get the mods I want done on it. I think she might need some fret work done, however. I changed the strings and noticed that the zero fret has developed grooves where the strings sit. Is that normal or is it time for a re-fret?

I'd imagine that since the zero-fret has constant pressure of a string on it; it will develop grooves. So probably normal.
As far as I see it ... if it's still a solid anchor point, and the grooves aren't creating some kind of buzz on open notes ... you should be fine with it as is.

I'm actually getting it re-fretted. I talked to a luthier here in town and he said it would need a new fret job as well as the fredboard sanded down because it's developed a hump up by the 12th fret on the treble side of the FB. He also said he hammered down a couple frets since they weren't in there all the way. He told me that the grooves in the zero fret were put there, not from wear. He didn't understand why they were there other than to keep the strings spaced evenly but that's what the nut is for. He also said that the zero fret was of the same material as the other frets and was the same size, which he would probably change when he re-fretted it.
