Another question for you long time users - how would you suggest best getting to know this pedal? I can imagine stepping through all 99 presets but of course there have to be better ways...

For me the far best way of learning the H9 is to use the software, esp. the one for smartphones (never tried the software for desktops). This makes the effects and their settings far more transparent. I have hardly ever touched my H9 during the 8 years I own it.

The desktop, tablet, and phone H9 apps are all essentially the same. I've used Mac laptop, iPad, and Android phone versions of the app. They have all the same functionality, just optimized for the different operating systems / screen form factors / etc.

I also really recommend focusing on 1 algo at a time. Each algo is basically a whole pedal.

I originally rejected the H90 as I've got two H9s and am very happy with them. But I am starting to rethink that after watching some demos with synths.

For those of you using it, I'm curious about the foot interface part. Is it easy to switch between performing and selecting presets? Is there a way to use your feet to reach the 2nd bank of 3 switches and is that even practical while playing? TIA.

It's a pretty big knob that activates pretty lightly. IDK if I'd necessarily recommend it, but it would be quite easy to tap with your foot.

Yes - all that stuff is pretty similar to the H9.

There is a list of stuff you can assign in the manual as well, you don't have to have the software to see that...

Thank you. Three more questions.

1. I currently use an effects switcher. Mainly it’s so I can turn off time based effects while I turn on distortion and vice-versa. If I set up consecutive programs on the H90 and switch, it sounds like with spillover I will have the same functionality?

2. The other thing I use it for is assigning a single expression pedal for MIDI control of one or both of my H9s. Am I right that with the “program” settings I can control one preset, the other preset, or both at once with the expression pedal?

If the answer is yes, this could significantly shrink and reduce the complexity of my pedalboard.

I think so…

mid you are using an es8 you could for sure regardless of the h90 (not sure about h90 and both simultaneously- will have to check) but there are 2 expression ports so worse case scenario is use both control outs from the switcher and map them both to the expression pedal.

pretty sure you could do it directly with the h90 and mapping but that’s one workaround- the other is to have you expression pedal mapped to midi and send controls that way

Gotcha - I was thinking along those lines two… but I do have some analogue guys that are tough to replace and my switcher made preset sounds much easier - so now that I’ve torn everything apart and retired it - I’m starting to rethink it. Maybe a mini midi controller would suit me - still kicking things around in my head. The ES8 is amazing but it does take up a lot of real estate.

I will try your expression pedal thing out- any specific algos you want me to test it against?

For expression pedal stuff, I am thinking in terms of a program, which is running two presets. On the H9, the expression pedal is usually mapped to the hot knob. That's per preset. But now we've got presets and programs. The instructions here are a little confusing: 6.4. Parameters — Eventide H90 documentation

It seems to say that I cam choose whether to assign the expression pedal to the hot knob for preset A or preset B, OR the hot knob for the program. Is that a per-program setting?

Also, what I meant about the switcher is this: can I ditch my switcher and use loop 1 for drive pedals, loop 2 for another reverb, and then switch them on and off per program, with spillover?

Routing and on/off state for each loop is on a per program basis, yes. You can further assign turning a loop on/off to switches, although it can't be part of a Hot Switch.

I don't usually think about or care about spillover (I think Eventide calls it "trails") so I can't help you there.
