Official Eventide (H9/Factor Series) Settings Thread!!!

I was messing around some more and randomly stumbled upon something reminiscent of the 3leaf Audio You're Doom - which I never would have thought possible.
What I marked as "expression sweep" are actually the range of settings that seem to work - assigning these parameters to X/Y/Z switches could be a good idea.

And some creative use of the delay algorithms to uncover a few "hidden" sounds: bit Crusher, low gain overdrive and swell

Hi Everyone,

Picked up an H9 by mail order to try it out. I figured a couple weeks at home would be better than doing it in a guitar shop for a few minutes.

Pretty amazing sounds!

But I'm confused about something. With most effects, you'd want a mix of wet/dry. But with the filter, doesn't the wet/dry mix defeat the whole purpose? Is there a way around "killdry" being a global setting so when I switch on the filter it's just the filter sound? I'm looking for a "sweepable filter" sound, not an auto-wah, but even there. . .

Thanks.

Without looking at the manual I think killdry is only global if you turn it on, otherwise the wet/dry ratio is determined per algorithm. I think that both of the filter algorithms in the Modfactor engine are full wet, and the intensity knob controls the shape of the filter.

Yeah I haven't bothered to learn the filter algorithm on the h9 since I've had my Xerograph and Mobius for longer and I like the sounds I get from them. But! Before you even posted this I was planning on spending some time with the H9 filters later today. If I learn anything I'll report back.

Thanks. My fantasy is that it can replace the Xerograph on my board. Love that pedal, but two pedals with expression pedals is a lot of real estate.

PS -- messing around with it now. I have a serviceable bass wah going. Next step: sweepable filter. I keep getting distracted by expression control of delay feedback and self-oscillation. OMG.

Okay, here are a couple presets. Haven't tried them at volume, and of course your bass setup will be different. And it's my first day messing with the pedal. With the Xerograph, I have it set with pretty high resonance, and to sweep from the "Lasswell sound" -- a dub, closed filter, to a wide open resonant filter. Pretty mellow by itself but roars with a little overdrive or a lot of fuzz.

So that's what I'm going for with the H9.

Known issues: the low end of the sweep on my Moog EP-3 goes by too fast. I can't get the huge resonant hump I get from the Xerograph, but I also think in a live/band setting those differences may not be such a big deal. The wah seems better for overdriven filter sweeps, the lo-pass gets me a better "Lasswell sound" and works well with fuzz. But again, I won't really know until I try it with people.

TB won't let me upload the presets or a folder with them in it. So here are screenshots but you won't get the sweep. Let me know what you find.

Okay, I'm adding two filter settings into the Dropbox folder, and also a few attempts at Crunchstation, with which I'm not terribly impressed.

The Q-Wah setting works great as a bass wah, especially with fuzz or overdrive in front of it. The mod filter preset does the dubby-thing alright but is not as nasty when you open it up. You will need to tweak the top and bottom filter settings to work with your bass and amp.

Here's the readme for CrunchStation:

Here are my first tries at some distortion presets on the H9. I’m not in love with Crunchstation yet, and I don’t think it will be replacing my distortion pedals.

Volume and sensitivity settings will probably be all wrong for you, since every bass is different. I made these playing a Lull M5V (jazz-style 5-string) into the return of an Orange TB500 and a custom 2x10 cab.

Od-bass is my attempt at a bass overdrive. It sounds alright, though it’s not going to replace that on my board. It’s a little midrangey but I’m used to it sounding that way by itself and good in a mix with a heavy guitar.

Decapods are my modification of that preset try to cop a muff-like fuzz tone. They are pretty good.

Synthy fuzz is meant to be more like the kind of thing you’d put in front of a filter and expression pedal.

Bad assmaster was my attempt to clone my Malekko B:Assmaster. It’s not very close, and I couldn’t get near it with the controls. The filters and stuff in the actual pedal just do stuff the preset can’t do.

Again, you’ll probably need to adjust level and drive for your specific pickups and amp.

Great thread! I am currently playing around with an H9 for a review, and I was wondering if anyone had a recommendation for how to get a tone reminiscent of Chris's bass on Madness by Muse. With analog pedals, I've been having good luck with an octave pedal into an envelope filter. I am confident that the H9 can also nail this, but before I spend a lot of time tweaking, I was wondering if anyone had already cracked this particular nut.

Thanks, Tom.

I just got my H9! I both love it and am horribly overwhelmed by it. I bought an expression pedal, but realized that it isn't as functional as I thought it would be. Have a three button switch on the way to replace it. I'm intrigued by a midi foot switch, but want to wait until I play around with it a bit more.

I'm planning on purchasing a few algorithms this week. I mostly play classic '77 style punk, but am getting more and more interested in using gothic, new wave, post punk type sounds in places. Maybe even some dub. I bought the chorus algorithm and the tape echo.

I'm interested in hearing what settings people are finding the most useful (like the top 5 I should get straight away) and if people want to share how they are using them. I also like all the tweaks that have been posted. I saw in a earlier post that there was a Dropbox with patches. Would love to see that.....

PM me your e-mail and I can add you to the Dropbox.

It's really hard for me to recommend specific algorithms, since I would probably just recommend the Max. Do you have the Regular or the Core? They both come with Crystals, right?

My most used algorithms, not necessarily recommendations:
Diatonic
Crystals
Chorus
Band Delay
Digital Delay
Synthonizer (I do flute sounds on guitar)
H910/H949
Harmodulator
Pitchflex

My advice: since you didn't buy the Max, treat each algo as a pedal. Especially if you're new to effects. Don't try to do it all at once.

Early punk used no effects beyond compression, EQ, distortion. New wave, of course, was really varied. Pick the songs you love, learn what he bass player was using, try those first. Chorus and echo are great to start and learn with. The expression pedal is super useful for delay swells, cutouts, pitch shifting, filter sweeps, etc.

I really like how it works as a compressor. 90% of the time, I have it on as a comp.

But, I have found some interesting algos that you might find useful in the "Crush Station"

I use Bisque often.

The only thing I and a bit irked about is that the infeed peak varies so much from one effect to another. I have a VTBass Deluxe and a Crybaby just before it, and I have to manipulate the input/output to keep from breaking up.

Here's a few presets I've been having success with. My patches are for the most part pretty simple and straightforward - these are the things that work for me in a band context. What I use tends to have an expression pedal component, that really makes the pedal useful for me.

BlendWham: octave down when engaged, the expression pedal brings in an octave up with toe down, so in this position you have octave down, dry, and octave up. Octave down and dry are present at all times. any tone from unison to octave up is available to sweep with the expression (holding a note and sweeping it all the way is a nice effect too)

Dry+1: same idea as above but without the octave down

+maj3: expression blends in a major 3rd alongside the dry signal. Very simple but I love this one. All three of these do wonderfully stacked with dirt/fuzz and envelope in my set up.
