Just realized when I posted yesterday I didn't reply to your post so not sure if you saw, but I did end up taking some pictures! Seems like it might be a body of an APB-80 with a neck from an APB-70? Either way, after giving it a good clean and setup yesterday the thing sounds absolutely killer especially with the Quarter Pounders!

@Zooberwerx @Rudyboy98

Quarter Pounders? This is starting to get serious.

I'm starting to wonder if we're dealing with different designations for necks and bodies...shared / interchangeable components for like instruments. Makes a lot of sense during the manufacturing process. For example, a "70" neck (2x2, maple fingerboard) would fit any number of 4 string offerings with various finishes, woods, and pickup configurations.

IIRC, this one came with the stock proprietary adjustable nut. I have the 5 string nut in my parts bin...it's gawd awful!

I think you’re spot on about the necks and bodies being interchangeable, I looked up “APB-70” and “APB-80” and came across many basses that had either the exact body or neck on mine but not both.

As for the pickups, I’m just about positive they were added by a previous owner based on this old Reverb post I found of my exact bass (here’s an even older Reverb listing of the same bass with what I assume are the stock pickups.)

NBD!

I got a nice companion to my MHB-110 from just about the same year, but this one is absolutely unique to my knowledge. It’s a factory prototype build that most closely resembles an FPM-80 neck-thru, though the neck pickup is in the FPM-70 position.

The control setup is 2V-1T with a 3-way pickup selector. Additional controls are unique in that there seems to be one mini switch for series/parallel between both pickups and two more mini switches. Based on the behavior of those switches, they seem to be phase switches, one for each pickup. This setup gives all sorts of tonal options with both pickups selected and with individual volumes. There is one more mini switch (the bare metal mini switch with the red painted top) that doesn’t do anything for now, but I would guess it’s a potential preamp on/off that was disabled.

This bass, tonally, is a step above my old Bomber BO-60 and resonates with authority when unplugged. Easily the best double P bass I have ever played.

Very cool. Enjoy. What year do you figure is this model? My guess is 1986?

I’m solidly of the opinion that it’s from 1978-1979. This would have to have predated the Fernandes BC Rich copies and still be on a timeline with the Bomber/FPM/Master Hand series.

I will get a control cavity pic this weekend

Nice! Pic of the control cavity? Compatible with phantom power maybe?

If my Master Hand MHB-110 with the Alembic pickup/circuit copy that has an xlr jack with phantom power capability is anything to go by, then I wouldn’t be shocked if that was a design intention. There are some basses out there with xlr jacks (Anthony Jackson’s Fodera flocked to mind) so it wouldn’t be shocking to me if it turned out to be an alternate output if a phantom powered preamp wasn’t intended. I’ll post the control cavity soon.

I threw in a few angles together below. So after playing it a bit, I’ve figured out that it’s two series/parallel switches (1 per pickup) and a phase switch. The red dot switch doesn’t seem to do anything though it’s wired up somehow. However, I haven’t had enough time to comb through this bird’s nest to sort that switch out. Either way, there isn’t much room to thrown in a preamp. Looks like the XLR lugs are connected to the 1/4 output lug so that using either or for the output seems to be correct operation.

As for tone: the neck pickup soloed absolutely nails a maple board P-bass sound in series and gives offers some more complex tonal subtleties in parallel, which really get accentuated with some overdrive. The bridge pickup is what one would expect: a thicker bridge pickup tone. The in-between settings with mini switches toggled with both pickups on can go all the way from thick to nasally with a surprisingly close MM impersonation in there. 34095F4F-DCBE-44E4-B95D-C342E45299B0.jpeg 435EBA3D-B923-4B70-836D-099FDF984328.jpeg 5402F52C-BCF2-4D69-8CF9-242D0C113FBB.jpeg 6AFB0BFA-4F74-429D-BA98-0BCDF9F7B24F.jpeg

That's just pretty durn neat! I'd co-post the pics in the "Pickups" forum as they config smacks strongly of an Alembic harness. Anytime I see something "red", it suggests a powered or phantom-powered scenario.

That is really interesting. I thought the same thing - the XLR jack must be for powering active electronics. But the thing is, it doesn't look like there is anything that actually takes power. All of the electronics in the photos are passive. Based on what I can see, it looks like the controls are basically just regular "P-bass" controls x2, with a volume and RC-type tone control for each pickup. (The volume control appears to be just a 2-gang/stereo pot, so that it controls both pickups at the same time.) And then the switches are for things like phase and/or series/parallel per pickup, plus possibly phase and/or series/parallel for the combination of the 2 pickups.

This is a total guess, but the XLR jack might do something like enabling "stereo" wiring - i.e. separate outputs for each pickup, like the Rickenbacker Rick-O-Sound.

If you (or a tech) can trace out all of the wires and devices, and draw out a schematic, it probably would start to become pretty clear what each thing does.

In any case, the controls definitely appear to be an aftermarket mod! I'm not aware of any Fernandes FPM model (or the similar BO models) that had these controls as stock. Also, as you mentioned, the neck pickup position is more like the 1-pickup FPM-70 model. I really wonder if this was originally a 1-pickup model, and the bridge pickup was added later?

Whatever the case is, very cool bass!!

Yeah, I’m going to have to run this thing down a little more. I can definitely say that the holes for the volume/volume/tone more or less correspond to the positions for 3 of the pots on the MHB-110. The mini switch holes are where the FPM pots would be and they aren’t big enough to accommodate pot shafts. Everything else from there doesn’t seem to have a precedent. I wouldn’t doubt that there were aftermarket operations done to the bass but I can say that this bass doesn’t fit a template for a series-production bass. Could be that an employee took a blank home and put his own spin on it.

As for the XLR, it could provide phantom power as the one on my MHB-110 does. This would explain the red-topped switch. I would imagine it won’t be too hard to throw in a small preamp board in here without much fuss.

Thanks for the help!

Hello everyone!
I recently purchased an FSB-40. I haven't received it yet, but in the mean time I was wondering if anyone could tell me what exactly the switch does? I tried searching this thread already so if I missed the answer in a previous post I apologize. Also, depending on what the switch does, if I decided to upgrade the pickup, is there a specific pickup that would still allow function of the switch? Thank you all in advance.

Per other ads: series / tap / parallel wiring.

I have been thinking of getting a 32" scale mij bass for a do up project. Anyhow, I put a bid in on an ebay auction for what I believe is a Fernandes FRB-45 Revolver from 1990's. Would I be throwing good money after bad, (assuming my bid won) or could it be a good bass to do up. I have no knowldege of Fernandes bass guitars per se, other than a little research on Reverb. I think it's a nice looking bass. 1990's Fernandes Japan Revolver Bass Guitar Project (Thrift Shop 0.99c Auction) | eBay

Wouldn’t pay top-dollar but it has potential.

Yeh. I wouldn't pay big bucks. Hopefully I can get for a reasonably low price, including postage. You know with auctions, have in your mind your max bid. And leave off if you get outbid. Unless of course you had zillions and it was a really rare bass, and or, previously owned by someone famous or infamous. I am a newb to buying a bass via an auction . I like the shape of the body
