Official Joyo Club Part 2: Beyond Thunderclone

I'm back just to reiterate how much I am LOVING the Joyo UD!!!! I know each person has their preferences but IMO this pedal gives the PERFECT OD that I was looking for. I am so freaking happy with this pedal. I feel like I should buy another one to have as backup in case something ever happened to it.

I still have my Boss ODB3 on my board but honestly at this point its future is in doubt.

Mine always makes it back to my board. I take it off, try other OD's but there's just something about it.
I especially love it now that I'm blending it with my clean tone.

Yes, I like the UD, but I almost threw it off my board because I lost too much low end and bass character if I wanted just a slightly overdriven tone. But I have changed my mind and will build a two button blend pedal instead, where I can select between true bypass, only buffered dry signal, blended dry and FX and only FX. I think that will be fun and make the UDs range even more usable.

With my copy, the 3 band eq is awful, the q for each frequency is so wide, it effects the next band. If i boost bass, it effects the mids massively too. Any of changing of the 3 band eq seems to effect the over all gain too. So I dial in an OD setting which I like...then I think hmm a little less mids...I turn the mids knob and the bass drops out and the gain drops which takes out the drive, so I then have to re-dial in the drive again. every time I tweak one knob, I have re-dial in the whole pedal. I don't see the point of the level control because the input into the gain stage is so effected by the BMT controls. I got so frustrated with the bypass muddiness and the general mess of the EQ that I hardly spent any time with the actual quality of the grit...except to say that my other pedal s are clearer sounding. I suspect that the 3 band EQ is set before the drive circuit and that I believe is part of the problem. The EQ (for this pedal) should be post Drive to decouple it from influencing the gain stage. I was really disappointed with this unit, I had high hopes. I would have to EQ this flat on the pedal then have an eq from it's output. Then, I'd need to put the whole pedal in a loop so that it didn't effect my tone when bypassed. For a £40 pedal, that's a lot of accessory units and it's not worth my time. I'll go and look for something off the shelf. I was hoping to put this pedal at the end of my dirt chain and use it as an EQ as well as an OD, but it's too tricky for either uses in my opinion.

I have no idea if this is just a rogue copy or that my hi-fi quality cab is exposing the low quality of this pedal. My 1x12 cab uses a 2" soft dome mid unit, which is exceptionally clear and detailed.

Well...I sent the old one back and asked for a replacement (I was considering just ditching it completely...but your conviction convinced me to give it another try) and when I got home, a replacement was waiting for me. This one is really nice...and a complete contrast the 1st one. I'm really liking this. The level and drive need some careful tweaking they interact with each other a lot and if I turn the drive to zero and up the level a bit, I have a 3 band EQ. The mids are a little low (800hz I think) and dark, but that voice control really brings the upper mids under control. In fact, I could easily do away with the BMT and just have one tone control. Loving the gentle overdrives and it's fairly dynamic too. It's a keeper folkes!
The bypass on this one seems to work fine, so I wonder if a few of the components on the 1st one were faulty.

I ended up selling my UD, I liked it, but no real use for it. The JP-14 American stayed. I have used it as an amp sim into an Art TubeMP Studio, to a powered wedge and it sounded awesome. Good top end sparkle, nice smooth lows. Very impressed. Got it set as a light overdrive currently into a Art tubePAC/EQ and powered wedge with equally impressive results.
