Yeah, I imagine amazon probably has a little better pricing maybe, but I am SO IMPATIENT there is no way I could wait for the slow boat from China.
I got my American off of Amazon. Free 2 day shipping. I had it in no time.
So, I talked to my wife about it today. She is an artist (actually went to university in fine arts, has more paint brushes and paint knives than I will ever have pedals

Well I ordered a build your own kit for a comp. Been sitting here still wondering about the joyo comp. Heck with it... Wife won't notice $30.

How hard do you have to hit the pedal for those steel stamping kits? I was afraid to hit it too hard and got a very vague indention. I want to redo it and try again.
You've got to hit it pretty hard. I was lazy about it and didn't put a piece of wood underneath and sort of bent the top of the enclosure. You'll have to put a 2x4 in there or the like to ensure you don't do what I did.
Edit: take your time too. Don't rush it. And if you need to redo or repress any letters, make sure you're in the exact spot the letter was originally pressed.
Got an American Sound yesterday, and had a bit of a play with it. First impressions (played with an MIA P with fresh rounds, as a preamp into the effects return of my head):
- I really like the tone. Got a full sound, keeps low end and has an almost 'tube-y' warmth.
- Easy to use, getting the voice/character knob dialled in properly seems to be the most important part, and once that's good the EQ and drive seem to interact with it well
- With the gain cranked, it gets a very strong metal tone; not something I'd use often, but for heavier music it'd be ideal. If I had a doom project on the go it'd be a pedal I'd want to use for it
- Unfortunately, there seems to be quite a lot of hiss when the gain/voicing knobs are turned up, considerably more than with a Sansamp
- I could also do with the switch moved down slightly, or the two rows of knobs being closer together : I'd be concerned about switching it on and off without accidentally knocking one of the settings
I'm aiming to try it at practice tomorrow, alternating with a VT Bass, to get a real feel for it. I'm looking forward to trying to try it in a mix as it feels like it has some heft to it. I think it'll depend on the level of hiss as to whether its something I'll use often, but it cost me less than a 4 string set of Sunbeams - you can't really go wrong for that price.

Mine doesn't hiss. Maybe when the gain is fully cranked it gets a little noisy but I figure that's no different than a muff pedal.
I think it varies in what we all consider loud or hissy. To me, my american gets loud and hissy too when the voice and drive are cranked. Understandably. I just back the voice down a touch till it's tolerable. Now when I showed this pedal to a fellow bassist, he was not very impressed and said the noise the pedal made was a deal breaker for him. I thought it unfortunate for him but understood. He likes his signal DEAD quiet no matter what he uses or has engaged. Which, in my world, isn't realistic. In MY world. I can see if you were a studio guy and did nothing but studio work how that noise would be a deal breaker. But being as I'm mostly a gigging and practicing musician, I can get by with a little noise. Plus, again, it's a $30 pedal at the end of the day. And what a pedal for that price IMO!
Well, there are TONS of pedals worth ten times the price of the American that are not dead quiet when the gain/volume is set to max. Heck, if you have a twitter in your cab(s), some amps will do the same.
