Amazing - is that a wenge top with some sapwood?

I notice on both your bass and JP's that there's a small mark in the top right below the switch - does this have a purpose? It's hard to see just what it might be.

Can some of you JP Fretless owners help me out - I'm wondering if I'd be able to get a "Jaco" (J-bass bridge pickup) tone out of a JP, since the bridge pickup seems shifted towards the bridge. I like that position in general, but I'm curious if it allows for that J-bass tone.

Hi Jeff, the top is only made with Wenge... A strange piece of wood that JP found.

The mark is the led of the battery tester from the Audere preamp.

I thought it looked like the LED from an Audere, but I was unaware JP was offering this preamp. I take it he used a 2 band model?

Does your bass have piezos too? If so, does the Audere have 3 buffer stages to handle all the inputs independantly?

Thanks for the info - sounds great! I'm not a fan of the deep red that Paduk can sometimes have, but yours is a little more brown and looks really nice :)

I've been looking for a comparison of JP Fretless tones with the piezos and mag. pickups. You've settled it for me, I'm definitely getting both :D

edit: Did JP install the Hipshot/Graphtech piezo bridge or is it a different one?

I have a question for all you JP Fretless owners. I was very set on ordering a new JP once Cliff gets up and running with them, but now I'm feeling like I might better achieve my goals with a different bass.

I have a really woody sounding piezo fretless already (Rob Allen) and I'm looking to add a modern sounding fretless to my stable. All the clips I've heard (JP graciously dug some of OwO's work up for me) sounded great, but I'm not convinced I can get that "Jaco bridge pickup" sound. I think this is partly an issue of electronics, where with the 2-band preamp you don't get to boost the mids the same.

Can any of you reassure me, or am I really better off with another bass that I know will suit my tastes very well (probably Roscoe, or maybe one of Cliff's own CB basses)?

Interesting point Jeff, the 2-band vs. 3-band preamp is an issue that deserves it's own thread. I'd personally go for a 3-band as I think it DOES provide for more tone options. But that's just me.
Even after hearing their point, I've always wondered why several builders disagree on this so emphatically ...

Yes, well on a fretted bass 2 band is more than enough. I love the fretted sounds I've heard from JP Basses, and while I've liked the fretless clips too, that one key tone that I want in my arsenal is missing.
