It does matter. It increases your chance of winning to bid late, because you're not tipping anyone off as to what your max bid is.
I know for a fact that I successfully acquired my 55-94D that way, because the seller told me he had an email complaint from the guy I outbid, saying that I "cheated" by bidding that late because I didn't give him the opportunity to outbid me. Sounds to me, from what I'd heard, if I'd bid the same amount 30 seconds earlier I wouldn't own that bass. That matters
