A little on track, what are the best ways to ship a bass if I don't want to include the case? I figure there's no reason to include my Lakland case since I can just use that for the 55-02 I pick up. I also have to be careful, don't want to end up bassless waiting on a b&m 55-02, because I will accept no substitutes... unless it's a b&m 55-94 or something like that... or a Sadowsky

Go to your local Guitar Center and they'll hook you up w/a box. They've got'em that hold a bass in place w/out a case. Oh that rhymes...

If you have a gig bag, even a cheapie, it helps. You can get guitar boxes at UPS or sometimes in back of music stores. U-Haul has big bags of shipping peanuts for pretty cheap. If you aren't a company with an account, USPS has the best shipping rates I've found, even with Priority. I've shipped basses across the country fully insured for $50.
The absolute cheapest way I've found is to remove the neck. If you can do this, you can fit it in a 'Lamp Box' from U-haul. Wrap each piece in bubble wrap, put peanuts in the box then trim down the height of the box as much as possible. That box should then be able to be shipped, fully insured with a tracking number via Parcel Post. I just shipped a 35" bass this way from LA to the East Coast for $22.50. It would have been $39 to ship that same bass Priority Mail.
UPS is the most expensive, and FedEx doesn't seem to want to insure anything for more than $100 that they themselves don't pack ($$$).
These observations are all based on basses coming out of California.

The unfortunate thing that affords us the ability to buy Laklands, pine for Ampegs, buy BMWs, and hope to maintain them. And sometimes it affords a mortgage, feeding the children and sending them to school, bills, nice things for the fiancee soon to be wife....

What's the deal with being a supporting member. I see where it talks about the things you can possibly get through the year, but not where to sign up or any costs involved. Is it as simple as registering for the LOG forums, or is there more to it?
