There are a few differences. The neck profile is different. Not as much depth and the board radius is 7.25" as compared to the jo's 10". I have an alder/rosewood us jo and an ash/maple us dj. I love the neck on each for different reasons.
The body is noticeable smaller than the JO as you've seen. Also, the pickup placement is a little different. The bridge pickup is closer to the bridge on the DJ than on the JO. My DJ has much more bite to it while the jo is warm and growly.

so the alder/rw dj would have the ergonomic differences and a little more bark from the bridge than a JO. Finding a used alder/rw DJ is probably out of the question, where used US JOs are much easier to come by. They've made over 500 (I think) of the US JO4s and are just getting into the 40s on the DJs.

I can tell you that Carl Pedigo, Lakland's head luthier, believes that fretboard wood doesn't make much difference in sound (OTOH, he thinks body wood makes a much more substantial difference). Also: I own three Skylines, and while the necks are very nice, they aren't the pure butta that a US Lakie neck is (IMO). I think you're better off selling the DJ and getting an alder/rosewood JO (the ones I've played have been great).

You've summed up things i know but which I didn't put together. The pickup placement, the body size and radius are all key features... Yes, I think a JO is the way to go.

for those of you who don't remember, there was a US DJ on eBay a bit back that was trans blue with a maple board, ebony inlays and matching headstock. That's his.
And in case you've forgotten, I'm the proud owner of my own US DJ

OK guys.. I have the opportunity to get a used Skyline 55-01 5 Bass.... for under $500 .. so I am curious.. whats the skinny on these basses? I have done a little research.. and I have yet to read anything but stellar reviews on any Lakeland bass.. I had never heard of them till I came here (Sheltered me... ) So whats the scoop...? and why is this bass retailing for 1G+ while the others are going for 2G+ .... Just curious... If I like the bass and it talks to me I am buying it.. I'll have to do without a few other things for a few months.. but.. :)

Buy it! I've never played a 55-01 myself but for a less than $500 Lakland I really don't think you can go wrong.

I'll have to go along with the drunk guy. ;)

Side by side my black DJ & AC/DJ there was an obvious difference between the two.

The rosewood board (with Lindys) is/was much 'darker' & the maple (with Laklands) was much 'brighter'.
Both had Audere JZ3s set flat & both wearing Hi Beams.

That said, there's always the pickup factor that can be debated as well.

I think there is a slight difference, but it can easily be EQ'd out one way or the other. I think strings, pickups, and body wood are much bigger factors.

Definitely all things factor in & can be eq'ed one way or another, but then there's ears too.

Drunk or not, it's what the player hears. Some even say they can hear the difference in clay dots vs. abalone. :rolleyes:
