well, I'm sending the Fretless DJ back in to have an acrylic coating put on the fingerboard. After three nights of long gigs (Total of around 10-11 hours use), the fingerboard has taken a beating. Attribute that to my very heavy left hand. Before I destroy the board I'm going to get it protected. I guess, now, there will always be some surface cracks on the board, but it's not too noticeable and the tone won't be impaired by them. I'm just nervous about how the acrylic count affect the tone. I love the tone as it is now, but oh well. It'll still be great, just a little different.
It's still going to be my #1... maybe in a year or two, I'll have another fretless DJ made for me as a backup. I already have it spec'd out :bassist:
how did it get surface cracks?

have them sand it before coating it, to take the wear off.

they would probably do it automatically

Yeah...if you are seeing wear already, you are doing the right thing.

Hey guys and girls,

I'm still a couple of months away from buying my first Lakland but I'm wanting to get all my questions sorted first. I'm looking at a Darryl Jones 5. So...

Should I go with passive or active?

I play funk and a bit of dub/dance mixed in there. I'm using pedals a lot and plan on getting quite a few more. I'm not super into fuzz though - have heard that some fuzz pedals don't play well with active basses.

How well do the Audere preamps work with effects?

I did a search but couldn't find any direct comparisons between active and passive in the same model bass.

I've used the Audere and didn't have a problem with effects, just had to adjust the gain staging appropriately. The Audere is probably the most transparent onboard pre I've used, like Matty said, it's just your sound boosted.
Hope that helps.

Well, looks like I've missed about 30+ pages while moving to my house on the 12th, painting, pulling up carpet and laying some wood lam flooring. Still have a garage full of boxes to go thru too.

My band has made it to the finals in a battle. We could win about 6K in goodies, and better yet, an opening slot for a big name. Wish us luck please.

GOOD LUCK! don't forget the little people, hehehe.

Awesome news! Good luck in the finals!

So I've noticed a bunch of you guys go through Laklands like tissues... Does anyone have a Lakland that they simply can't see themselves ever selling (at least in the foreseeable future)?

I've toyed around w/ the idea of selling my 44-02d to help fund a Hollowbody, but it's so damn versatile, I think I'd really miss it and just end up buying another one later.

The Decade is not ever going anywhere...definitely not one of my JO CS's...

If you can avoid it, then don't catch the disease. My Oly White USA JO5. I've decided I will never sell.

it's very possible that i'm going to hang onto this 55 proto for quite a while.

until i find another that catches me, i probably won't be holding any others.

I hate to see any of them go, but GAS can be a very motivating factor.

Heck, I've bought 'another one' of about everything... several times...

I have tried most of the models now (still missed getting a DJ) and know which ones I like and which ones just aren't me. Ends up, I'm a pretty simple guy... my Bob Glaub is my favorite, so now I just built a fretless one too. The 44-02 is the one I still think about... will probably end up with another one, eventually.
