Official Markbass Club Pt. 2

Hey all.

I went and got myself a new rig the other day, after being sick of borrowing my mates Trace Elliot 4x10 and lugging it's heavy arse around. I went in with the Little Mark II in mind, but then tried the TA501 and had to have it! I took it for a spin with the Classic 106, Classic 104, Standard 104HF and an Epifani UL410.

After playing around with the three Markbass cabs, as soon as I got to the Epifani, it sounded like I'd just switched from rounds to flats, so it was straight back to the Markbass. The Classic 104 won out, especially being quite a bit cheaper than the other options. I figure if I need to down the track, I can grab a Traveller 151P, but at the moment we're only playing smallish venues and I only have to compete with a drummer and acoustic guitar :)

My main bass is a Geddy Lee with Nordstrand NJ4SE Pickups with D'Addario Chromes XL Flats.

I played my first gig last night with the Markbass CMD 121P. I wasn't quite getting the tone I wanted with just the built-in LMII, but I always take my mini pedal board which is a wireless receiver, tuner, and Sansamp PBDDI, so the sansamp gave it the tone I wanted. The 121P was pretty much set flat, with only a couple clicks of VLE to tone down the piezo. I'll have to play around with the LMII some more to see if I can get it dialed in without the sansamp for those times when I just want to carry the 121P.

Plenty of power for the room (had about 60 people). Had the gain at about 10:00 and the main at about 10:00, so plenty more power if I need it.

It was also great to be carrying in only 30 pounds of amp. Unfortunately, I'm also the sound guy, so I carried in 4 monitors at about 45 pounds each, 2 main powered speakers at about 60 pounds each, speaker stands, two bags of cables, mixer board, and a 30 pound power amp.

Nice! I've heard nothing but good things regarding the 'classic' line from Markbass. While I dig the Epi410UL with the Markbass heads, it's a wide pure tone without much grind (especially the newer versions of the Epi cabs). I can see where if you wanted a more aggressive upper mid tone (especially if you are using flats), that Classic cab would just kill! Nice!

Exactly. I find the more transparent the cabinet, the crappier I sound is it shows up more of my inadequacies. The same thing happened when I switched from a Squier to the Geddy. Suddenly all this sustain was showing how sloppy I was :)

Plus, my name is Mark, so having a nice big Markbass logo seemed more fitting!

Dang US pricing! My TA501 set me back $AU1990!

And that's after a $AU500 error in my favour. Their website had the old price on it, so I made him sell it to me for that price. He grumbled and grimmaced :)

Now I just have to wait for it to get here!

I have four of each, but I'm going to move most of the Ampeg stuff out this week. After playing through the LMII and the Schroeder, the Ampeg just sounds too muddy for me. I was hanging onto it as backup but with the two MarkBass heads I think I'll be fine once I pick up another cabinet. Maybe a Schroeder 2x10 or 2x12.

The 410R (4 Ohm). I've only had it a week but it's already made me re-think my entire setup.

I got my LMII about a month ago and all I had for cabinets then were my Ampegs. The LMII was "okay" through them but the Schroeder was like lifting a blanket off of the speakers. I like having a 4x10, a 2x10 (or similar) and the 1x15. I may go that route again with the Schroeders.

Gentlemen, I would like to submit this horrible picture as proof of my commitment to The Markbass Owners club, and humbly request a number please. I promise to submit better pictures with my new Ken Smith 5-string at a later date. I also own a Markbass SD 800 that I play through my CL104. THANKS !

Oops, just noticed your signature. I kind of want to see if they're build me a compact 4x15 or 2x12/2x15 since their 2x15 is so light. The 412L clocks in at 73 lbs so I'm thinking a 4x15 would be under 90 lbs. But that would defeat the goal of having a compact, light rig for the LMII. :hmm:
