I don't know...Markbass is gearing up to have all their products available in the US by June, and the US is pretty much the last place in the free world that Markbass isn't widely available. Plus, $600 for their flagship amp isn't exactly a boutique price. So I'm still not sure we can call them "boutique."

Hmmmm..if you're referring to the LMII as their flagship, I might debate that with you. It certainly is a great product and one of their most popular in the U.S. When I look at MB's entire line, it looks like the LMII is one step above their entry level head.

Anyway, it doesn't matter to me. When I tried my MB 102P combo at GC, what I knew about MB was what I had read here on TB. And, I head also read good things about GK and the Shuttle also.

But....when I played through the combo, I knew....this is IT!! :hyper:

+1 :)

I'm sure this has been mentioned somewhere, but the SA450 is the essentially the LMII with more features, right? It should sound exactly the same when set flat?

Yep. Just has the enhanced midrange controls, adjustable DI, and the pre/post routed to a switch on the back. It's also a bigger form factor, and I THINK it might also come with rack ears as well because of that (like the SD800 does).

Interesting, thanks Vic.

Which, in a way, validates the LMII value proposition. They absolutely came up with the "everything you need, nothing you don't" solution for the club-gigging bass player, and made the product as small as possible. Bravo.

Meanwhile, I am going through a similar thing as Tony is, minus the new Berg cabinets. I am just sure that I will soon have a bunch of gigs that are too much game for my LMII and a 4x10 cabinet (!?) so I am thinking about ways to power a 2-ohm load so I can get all of my cabinets in play.

I would appreciate any input.

Here's my dilemma. I'm playing in a band that has 2 guitars (no stacks) and 4 singers. We play classic rock and contemporary country. I started with the LMII and a markbass 4x10HR cab and added a 15" Markbass cab. We mainly play clubs that can hold anywhere from 150 - 200 people. If I dropped the 15" would the 4x10 be sufficient by itself, in terms of being heard. I don't run thru the PA.

The 15" seems to muddy my sound and doesn't give me the more punchy sound that the band likes.

I could also add another 4x10 or a 2x10, but I am at a loss as to whether this would really do anything for me.

I would appreciate any input as I have not taken the Markbass out to any gigs yet, I still am getting familiar with it.

I switched from an ampeg svt3 with matching 4x10 and1x15. I just got tired of the sound and it just wasn't cutting it for me any more, I wanted a tighter sound.

Thanks

I would definitely add another 4x10 if you want maximum volume/punch in a full stack. I ran 2 4x10 cabs for years and think it delivers big time.

You will get 3 db more volume for having twice the cone area you will get a nearly a further 3 db for being able to run the amp at its intended minimum impedance (4 Ohms) you will get the same 'speed' and transient attack as a single cab (actually possibly more since the LMII prefers to run at 4Ohm) you will get a slight thickening of tone (in a good way) you will not get the added weight of a 1x15.

It will definetly be loud enough!!!

Sounds like what you need to me...

Oh I would recommend running the tweeter on cab two off completely. But play around anyways.

Thanks for the info.

Another thing I thought about after I made the original post was this. When I run the 1x15 with the 4x10, as I tweak the sound the 4x10 gets the sound I want but the 1x15 seems to take on a very different sound and sometimes its a sound I don't like and vice versa when I tweak for the 1x15 the 4x10 then gets a sound that fights the 1x15. Is this because the 10" speakers are faster and the 15" speaker is slower to respond hence the tight sound of the 4x10 and the muddy sound when I add the 1x15. Our music sometimes demands a lot of notes on uptempo stuff and this seems to be where I notice it most.

When I have seen what other bigger acts use I notice that when bass players use a 4x10 and 1x15 combo they usually use 2 amps. I assume they are dedicating 1 amp for each size cab ie: 1 for the 1x15s and one for the 4x10. In this way they can dial in the tone they want separately for each size cab. Am I wrong?

Also if I add another Markbass 4x10 should I add a front firing or go with their rear firing like I have now.

Thanks for all the help

Wow, lot of info. IMO & IME a 4x10 and 1x15 always worked best biamped for me, then you could at least control the level of the cabs against each other. This was going back aways, but the principle is as valid as ever. I dont think I ever heard of anyone delaying the 4x10 to get it to step in time/phase with the 1x15 though...

When using 2 4x10s on music that a 'slower' perceived attack needed I found the old palm muted thumb plucking perfectly conveyed the required sound, 15s and 18s werent needed (not even for dub - honest)

I have always got matching cabs for a 2 4x10 stack, precisely because I wanted a modular ported 8x10 and so I cant tell whether you should go with two different 4x10s. I would say that if you like the one of what you've got then I would stick with that. Also if one cab fails then it doesn't matter which - you always have a spare :)

Yes i have the shuttle 6.0 and for my applications i prefer it way over the MB stuff... To me it is more organic than the markbass...
The MB always has a cold feel to my ears.. I like full range but the MB has a cold top end and top mid that sounds un-natural to me.. And i like coloration to my sound . That is why i use a REDDI tube DI..
Im not sure if it is the preamp section of the MB stuff or the poweramp section... I have a Neve pre and would like to try it through the power section of the MB just to see if it is the preamp that is doing that.. I guess to each his own... If you say the MB does not color your sound then do an AB to an API or other high end preamp record out.. infact all amps / preamps color sound in a way.. other wise how can all these manufactures claim to have a flat eq and all the amps sound so different... i notice that with alot of very expensive studio monitors too.. they all sound different..mmmmmmm just my 2 cents

Oraganic is the perfect word describing the Shuttle 6.0 in contrast to the LMII! I also find the Shuttle to be more
"palpable." In other words, it has that sort of 'chewy' midrange/tube amp sound that is sooooo classic. Whether it's colored or not, I like how it sounds pure and simple! I personally think it's quite neutral and allows the truest sound of my bass shine through.

That said, I still like my LMII also. I'll have to try using a different bass to listen for the high end differences you mentioned. My Nordy VJ5 is a bit modern and bright to begin with. I'd like to try a passive bass through both amps to listen the un-natural mids and highs on the LMII that you mentioned. I submit the notion that with any given bass, those tonal properties may vary.
