He's speculating on the reason for the sale, without having the actual facts. You don't consider that spreading a rumor???

The issues with shipping damage are as common as buying instruments on the internet. Companies like MF would rather replace an occasional bass rather than employ someone to spend hours and hours repackaging basses....not to mention the increased costs for shipping these larger and heavier boxes. Consider it self-insurance.

Yellowed binding. It's not a sign of used bass....it's the sign you've bought a RIC.

I finally voted. "Very satisfied". With simple setup tweaks it's awesome. Wish it had 5 strings.

And to echo others... mine is new as well... as in it was never opened by MF (but it is a Feb 2010). It came in the rickenbacker shipping box, with those massive staples on it still. Clearly had never been opened. MF had to fold up and shove their shipping/return instructions thing under closed end of the box.

I have seen this on other Rics as well including a 2006 4003 Blueburst and a more recent 4003/FL Amber Fireglow. From my experience it seems to be fairly common.

Edit for clarity: I misread the comment. The problem I've seen is at the OTHER end of the neck, where it joins the body (between the body and the finderboard.

There is alot of information circulating through the forums that indicates when you agree to become a Ric dealer, you accept a certain number of Rics in all colors. It seems Rickenbacker has a good deal of control over your inventory, and not vice versa.

I don't know if it works that way at all. I think you just order whatever colors you want and then RIC makes them. There may be a minimum number of total units, but MID is their least popular color (at least from what I can tell) so it stands to reason these would sell less.

It also has some excess glue or something where the fingerboard and neck join near the headstock - oddly, there was a small piece of masking tape stuck over this. Again, nothing major. I also noticed that on the back, I can see and feel the joints where the body wings are glued to the neck-through body. Very slight, but noticeable. I don't remember seeing this on the Mapleglo 4003 I tried. Maybe they use a heavier undercoat or sealant on the clear finishes? Has anyone else noticed this and is it something I should be concerned about?

I voted "satisfied" and I think this one's a keeper unless those body joints turn out to be a problem. I would definitely exchange for another MB 4003 if I had to return it. Beautiful bass with a unique sound and feel, and a steal for the price.

My 2005 4003 Jet Glo had very noticeable lines on the back. My brand new MM SR (which I will be reviewing) is black and absoulty flawless. They are also 3 piece.

I've been a regular on the Rickenbacker Resource Forum for over a decade and can tell you there are no color quotas for RIC dealers. There is however a minimum quantity of instruments that you must order per year, but since it's less than the number of models RIC has, it's obvious you can stock whatever you want in any available color or quantity. Most instruments are built to order, and in runs of specific models which ship as soon as they're ready, which is why certain models seem to be scarce for quite some time before you see them again. Remember a few years ago when all the on line sites had availability dates for 4003's that was as far as 6 months away? By the way, RIC's most popular model is jetglo 4003's.
