I think my Lakland is a little easier to come by. Especially since they started making them this year

I think my Lakland is a little easier to come by. Especially since they started making them this year
Sorry, I didn't mean to disparage the G4 in my earlier post. I had a couple and I really had hoped they were going to be keepers. I do think the sound would likely benefit from Milli preamp....I bought a milli preamp specifically for a G4, though, and this is only my opinion, after owning one for a while, I concluded that the necks are too skinny (and I have smallish hands), the bridge is cheap, and that the entire sum of it's parts is not up to what we have in the GV. Dare I say, ..... almost toylike. Hence, I'd rather save the Milli preamp for a nicer instrument (Cirrus).
Well, I guess those are disparaging words after all.
But stricltly my opinion and I reserve the right to have my mind changed and my opinion modified. It wouldn't be the first time I was off my rocker about something.
I took no offense! Was more having a little fun at your expense. Don't most of these have Gotoh 201 bridges? It's a good no frills bridge, I have one on my p bass I built. Well not at the moment, it has a Babicz that my friend Tim put on when I loaned it to him. He used it for the Demo's of the Steve Harris pedal for Tech 21. Anyway, that darn thing is so heavy I may swap it on to the G Bass since they are pretty light. As long as I don't have to drill any holes.
Actually, one of mine had the Gotoh and the other had a Peavey knockoff... close to the same. They were ok, but the Hipshot and ABM bridges like on the Milli and Cirrus/GV, respectivly are a step above IMO. I like the wheel truss rod adjusters of the Milli/GV over the nut end allen key on the G4. Little things like that. But mostly it was the tiny neck and lack of heft, not that I like heavy basses, not at all.. a little hard to explain.
The Gotoh 201 is a good sturdy bridge. The Blade B2 I recently traded had one stock and I never had a problem with it. I noticed that the bridge on the Peavey G manual has a thinner bridge, so it could have been a gen 1 parts to get the first batch out the door. The basses are lighter but they are light.

I agree on all points. I don't mind a thinner neck though. I have a 96 Warwick Fortress Masterman that has the thinnest neck I've ever seen and I think it's pretty awesome.
The swap to the Babickz would be to give it a little more heft.
Well GC strikes again. They cancelled the order because they already sold it and did not remove it from the website. Thats two that haven't come my way. Oh well guess I'll put that on hold for a bit.

I'll keep my eyes peeled and let you know if I see anything. Are you looking for a four string G bass specifically?
I just scored a GV off Reverb. I had been looking on and off for the last couple of years, and it seemed that when I had the funds, there was never one available, and when I was broke, they would suddenly pop up. This one is on it's way to me. The seller says the condition is very good. Only mod to it is the wood screws were replaced with machine screws.
I hope you like the GV when you get it. I don't know why you wouldn't. I'm not much of a 5 string player. Out of 2wenty-some basses, the GV is my only 5, and I don't think I'd ever part with it. I've had a few 5s over the years ranging from a Squier VMP5 to a Modulus Q5, and the GV is the one that stayed. I've had a couple of G4s too, but there is really no comparing a G4 to a GV in my opinion. The G4s had pencil thin necks that were really too small for my liking. The GVs neck feels just about right, with enough size and mass to feel properly substantial, with out being so cumbersome for a regular old 4 stringer like myself. I think you'll be pleased with the electronics too. A lot of people recommend swapping in a Millennium preamp. I own Millenniums and Cirrusses with and without the Milli pre. I considered the swap on my G5, but chose not to since it sounds really great in it's stock arrangement.
I'm looking forward to it. I'm generally a 4 string player, and my only 5 is a real beat up PV Axcelerator, and I like the neck and scale on it. I've always wanted to try a graphite neck, and someone was kind enough to send me a bunch of sound clips of a GV and G and I really like the GV.
Well since I posted in this thread last I have picked up a G Bass and a GV. I still can't really say what the GV sounds like since mine has had a Bartolini Preamp installed and a pair of Bartolini Jazz pups. I will say it sounds awesome with that set up. I finally had a gig last Saturday for the 1st time since I got her. I played it in the last set and man that thing packed a serious punch on stage. Ran it through my old GK 400RB II and a Genz Neo 212t cab.

That's a sweet setup! I bet everything sounded beastly. I used my GK 550 with two Baer 112's and my GV and Millennium 4. I had no problem finding a sound that could not only sit in the mix but, do so without being too loud. Everything sounded rich and full.
I wouldn't mind trying out a G bass just to see how it sounds and feels. I'm holding out for a good Forum AX if I come across one.
Wow. Haven't checked the thread in a couple years. My bad. Good to see these basses still getting the occasional nod. Sure my Millies get more love, and yeah, the necks are super skinny on the four strings, but the tone? Here's a track I did with my G-bass about ten years ago that just ended up coming out last year. G-bass>modded Boss CS-3>ancient Korg Pandora>DAW. Can't recall anyone complaining about my tone.
