Flame-maple wings, maple and purple heart 5 piece neck, S/n 2606, Gibson 1994.
Still has the old-style knobs (black plastic, no push-pull, active/passive switch), 1 vol, 1 pan.

Here's my Tobias Basic 5:

This one's from the Gibson era build by Michael Tobias' crew right after they (Gibson) bought the company.
According to Mike Tobias: Eastern maple body, maple and purple heart 5 piece neck, S/n 1687, Gibson 1992.
This one has two volume knobs, one for each pickup.

So ...

Nice pair of instruments. I think I saw that black one for sale a while back. In fact I'm pretty sure, since there aren't many of them.
Glad it went to a good home. :D

I'm really glad to hear that TB members like some of the basses we built in Conway. We tried VERY hard to do the best job possible. It was an honor to work with some of the tools that Mike used when he moved his shop. Mike is a true genius and it shows that you can still make decent instruments with jigs he made over a decade ago.

Actually there were two for sale, about one week after the other. I bought the 1st of the two, and was very surprised that one week afterwards another one popped up for sale. :hyper:

ummm i heard that the new tobias are not that good anymore is that true??? am planning to buy a growler and where i live we dont get second hand basses let alone too many bassists... how would you compare the sound of a growler to a ummm say warwick thumb???

Well I can speak from personal experience with a Gibson Tobias Killer B and my previously owned Warwick Corvette. I haven't played a growler of thumb so I can't tell you exactly how they would compare however from my experience with Warwick I loved its Deep tone. They really are well made basses however what Made me sell my Warwick was the Thickness of the Necks. The thick neck made it hard for me to get around as compared to the ergonomic neck design of the asymmetrical tobias necks. Another thing was the Versatile Tones I could get from my Tobias. Very dynamic tones and I love the pickups and preamp in the Tobias. The warwick was nice but I just found it a difficult instrument to adapt my playing style to. where as the Tobias seemed to be a lot easier to dial in "my" tone and get around on the fret board.

Just my 2 cents.

I have a tobias toby pro 6 string bass. Its the one I'm playing in my avatar which is practically identical to this:

tobias6.jpg

I've been trying, so far unsuccessfully, to find pickups which would be a direct replacement for the ones currently installed in this bass. Has anyone else done such a replacement on a 6 string toby. Or does anyone know which pickups are installed in the Gibson tobias six string basses, such as the basic model.

Any help would be hugely appretiated.

Those are EMG DC shaped, though without exact dimensions it's hard to tell if the route would be slightly too big/small. Got measurements?

The Bartolini's in current Tobias models are not a direct replacement size-wise.
