Hey all:

Thanks for the add!
Here is my Japanese early-Gibson Tobias. Original owner from when I bought it in 1994!
Awesome! Looks like a fretless? Not too often you see someone owning a bass that long. Obviously it's a keeper, huh? Welcome to the club and add #135 to your signature, if you don't mind.

I have the Kingston 5 ZX and a 1995 535 Korina with Wenge Neck/Fingerboard.
There are some MTD-specific Clubs here; you might want to look them up. Our club charter welcomes MTDs as well as Tobias basses, but we actually have seen very little here from MTD owners.

Just curious, what are your observations about the differences between the 535 and ZX basses?

Wayne A. Pflughaupt

I was under the impression that Tobias and Michael Tobias Design (MTD) were in the same family (same luthier). Oh, well, I'll look up the MTD Club(s), then, since that's what I own.

My observation about the two MTD basses I have:
The Kingston is a China made bass. Nice quality. Good balance. Various tones with preamp bypass push/pull. Can be aggressive.
The 535 is USA made. Very good quality. Less than 9lbs. The Korina and Wenge Neck/fingerboard (replaced the original Korina Neck) gives a nice warm sound.
I'm going to upgrade the preamp. It seems a little weak.

May I join as well?

I'm new to Tobias basses, but I always liked the well-thought-out design. Hoping to learn more about them here...

My first was a neck-through Toby Pro V, which I keep strung with TI Jazz Rounds, and have been learning to play with a pick. (or plectrum, if you rather) The narrower string spacing (16mm) seems to be a little easier to navigate on it. Next came an early 90's Growler 5-string which is now fitted with TI Jazz Flats. Both came from the TalkBass Classifieds, the Growler very recently. Having read enough to know the Gibson-era Tobias doesn't garner the same regard as pre or post, I feel like they are a fantastic bass at the <$1000 price point. By any measure, ergonomically, quality of the build, really I don't have any negative to report.

I think the thing I like best is how different they are not only from my other basses, but even from each other. The Growler has almost limitless tonal possibilities with the way the electronics work with those contour switches, where the Toby is actually a little bit easier to dial-in whatever tone you're looking for with just a two-band eq. I find neither to be lacking, and that's saying something considering they I alternate them with several Rick Turner and Alembic basses.

So I'll be hanging out here for a while...

To those in the know, can a 18 volt pre run on 9 volts???
My 9 Volt Basic pre works fine at any output level.
My 18 Volt Classic works fine but the output is very hot and
easily saturates pre-amps and pedals if it is turned up over 2/3 output
which is where I normally set all my active basses.
Thanks

Been spending some time this weekend with this new-to-me Growler 5-string...

I love these contour switches... ordinarily I'm not a twiddler, but these things are awesome.

Pretty impressive that your Tobias basses can "hang in there" against the likes of Alembic and Rick Turner!

Oh, forgot to add that the 2 mini pots in the control cavity are set to almost off.
Wow, first I've heard of this. I don't think the mini pots actually cut the signal totally off, do they? If not I'd turn them down some more.

Hey, Thanks for the number. :)

Yeah, I like nice basses... my Turners and Alembic get gigged out too, as (just like these two) I got 'em to play. I'm very much looking forward to a good chance to give these Tobias a run, as so far they've only seen a couple practice sessions.

I'd like to know more about those trimpots sometime too.

Took the Growler to a recording session last Thursday with an alternative country upstart... I had only taken it as a backup, since I really haven't played it enough to be completely comfortable yet, but it worked out so well while we were getting levels, heck, I just ran with it.

I'm starting to "get" how the controls work, or rather how to get what I'm looking for from them. Started by soloing each coil, with the stacked tone at center detent, and played around with the contour switch at different tone settings. This thing has a LOT of potential tones. Oddly, the "growly" one is what I seem to be intuitively avoiding. Probably because I'm not much of a solo player... just meat & potatoes support-role for 98% of what I get booked for, particularly in the studio.

(as if you couldn't tell) I LIKE IT! :hyper: :bassist:

WHOA!! Those are absolutely stunning! You should have two numbers, but you'll have to settle for the one you already have – #97. I keep a file of beautiful Tobias basses that I come across here and elsewhere on the Web, and I'm definitely adding this pair to the collection!
