Tobias classic owners (up to #2044): I would love to know whats under the Bartolini Drop shoulder pickup covers, whether the pole pieces are located in the center like a jazz bass, split like a P-bass, or dual coil (2 rows).
This check can be done by touching different spots of the pickup with lets say a screw driver and listen where the signal is significantly stronger.
My MTD 435 has split, reversed Pbass type pickups.

My understanding is the drop shoulder pickups are blade style. His new pickups are reversed Pbass style pickups in a soapbar shell.

They are not P-style split coil. The new MTD pickups are reverse P-style split coils. The old Tobias drop shoulder pickups (Pre-Gibson basses) are dual-blade.

The only reason I have that up for sale is because I just purchased Tobias #666. It is in such great condition the sticker is still on the electronics cavity cover. Amazing solid bubinga. That's the only reason I've got it listed. That MTD is absolutely killer. I've got a Smith and Tobias #1969 and now Tobias #666... And MTD #1900. I can't keep them all. I need to sell one. It's just that I have a hankering for pre-Gibson Tobias. That MTD is a better bass though. It balances so well. It plays so well. It sounds more open. The 34" scale on it is just perfect. It looks amazing. Frankly I'm rethinking letting it go and selling one of my Tobias basses instead. I'm really torn. I might pull it down.

Anyway, here's number #666. Barely a mark on it.

Naturally you can't fully pass judgment on a bass that you can't get your hands on, but that's certainly a stunning piece of bubinga there!

You have two pre-Gibson Tobias' there, I think I'd sell the lesser of the two, or the Smith, and keep the MTD. ('Course, the main reason I can say that is because I've never played a Smith – hee hee!)

Dug up a picture from Post #766 of #1969, looks like it's bubinga too?

Yes, #1969 is bubinga top, wenge tone plate (center) and alder body. Flamed maple and purple heart neck.

Darn... maybe I need to keep the MTD.
